Bucking on acceleration and sulfur smell

I have an 02 Protege 5.My car decided to brake yesterday. It is reeking of sulfur and bucks when I try to accelerate, but only when I'm first getting into the gears. I've read a lot online saying it's the EGR valve or something and Mazda has extended the warranty on this part for 7 years. My mechanic friend also said it could be something with an oxygen sensor.

Your mechanic friend may well be right, a bad oxygen sensor or corroded MAF sensor can result in both the odor and the bucking. An alternative possibility for the odor is a leaking fuel pressure regulator. If a diaphragm related to the regulator has ruptured, the regulator will need replacing. There absolutely must be no gas in the vacuum line.

The smell of hydrogen sulphide used to be a side effect of catalysed engines before low-sulphur oils and fuels replaced the old-fashioned stuff.

The sulphur smell could be significant and mean either you have some dodgy fuel or maybe the engine is has too much fuel going through it and if it is misfiring there will be unburned fuel entering the cat.

Most acceleration misfires are caused by ignition faults so I suggest you begin your fault-finding by ensuring the plugs are good and the spark each receives is a powerful quality spark.

SOURCE: 2002 Mazda Protege acceleration problem

I had the same problem and found that the air admission tube was badly cracked.

Since this let air enter the engine downstream of the mass airflow sensor it is not measured so the engine ECU don't send the proper amount of fuel to provide the right air/fuel mixture. At higher RPM, the vacuum in the tube is enough to close the crack and hide the problem.

I temporarly repaired it with duct tape until I get the part.

This link is to a "How To Replace an EGR Valve" video. While he is doing this on a Ford F150 pickup, the tips he gives you should translate over to your Mazda easily, especially as he talks about the stickers under the hood designed to tell you where your EGR valve and solenoid is located. Give it try...I think it will work for you.

Hi,

HOW TO INSPECT EGR VALVE

Before attempting to troubleshoot or repair a suspected exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system on a vehicle, the following conditions should be checked and be within specifications.

  • Engine is mechanically sound.
  • Injection system is operating properly.
  • Mechanical-vacuum advance is properly adjusted or the electronic advance system is operating properly.
If one or more of these conditions is faulty or operating incorrectly, perform the necessary tests and services to correct the problem before servicing the EGR system.

96cfe5b.jpg

Before attempting any tests of the EGR system, visually inspect the condition of all vacuum hoses for kinks, bends, cracks, and flexibility. Replace defective hoses as required. Check vacuum hose routing. (See the underhood decal or the manufacturer's service manual for correct routing.) Correct any misrouted hoses. If the emissions system if fitted with an exhaust-gas-recirculation valve position (EVP) sensor, the wires routed to it should also be checked.
If the EGR valve remains open at idle and low engine speed, the idle operation is rough and surging occurs at low speeds. When this problem is present, the engine may hesitate on low-speed acceleration or stall after deceleration or after a cold start. If the EGR valve does not open, engine detonation occurs. When a defect occurs in the EGR system, a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is usually set in the powertrain control module (PCM) memory.

Why is my 2003 nissan Pathfinder stuttering and bucking all of a sudden?

Try unpluging the M.A.F. (Mass airflow meter) It will be on the intake pipe between the air filter and turbo. Start it up if it run's ok then replace. It will run without one but will be less MPG and may cause other problem's over time if not replaced

I have a 2001 Ford F150 V-8, it started bucking or something when I accelerate around 30 mph. it just started this yesterday and I don't know if this is a transmission problem, a rear brake problem or if...

Disconnect the vacuum hoses to the EGR Valve, plug the hoses removed. Forget the MIL Lamp set on the dash
Drive truck,if problem goes away, replace EGR.

You may along with the egr issue, have ignition misfires,do the egr first, then let me know how it is doing

If your spark plugs are in the motor more than 3 years or 50,000 miles, install new ones .

Well cover cleaning the throttle plate, maf sensor and other things ,after you fix the bucking.

1991 Volvo 240 bucks like a bronco and doesn't want to start.

I had the same problem w/ my 1979 242 GT.....Try looking at the fuel pump inside the gas tank (go in from the top under the mat in the trunk).....I had a broken hose that was connecting the fuel line from the in-tank fuel pump....or try cleaning or replacing the filter sock located there too & make sure the filter sock is at its proper height ! and check on the fuel pump itself....My bucking problem was more noticeable when the fuel level was low.
