I have an 02 Protege 5.My car decided to brake yesterday. It is reeking of sulfur and bucks when I try to accelerate, but only when I'm first getting into the gears. I've read a lot online saying it's the EGR valve or something and Mazda has extended the warranty on this part for 7 years. My mechanic friend also said it could be something with an oxygen sensor.
Your mechanic friend may well be right, a bad oxygen sensor or corroded MAF sensor can result in both the odor and the bucking. An alternative possibility for the odor is a leaking fuel pressure regulator. If a diaphragm related to the regulator has ruptured, the regulator will need replacing. There absolutely must be no gas in the vacuum line.
The smell of hydrogen sulphide used to be a side effect of catalysed engines before low-sulphur oils and fuels replaced the old-fashioned stuff.
The sulphur smell could be significant and mean either you have some dodgy fuel or maybe the engine is has too much fuel going through it and if it is misfiring there will be unburned fuel entering the cat.
Most acceleration misfires are caused by ignition faults so I suggest you begin your fault-finding by ensuring the plugs are good and the spark each receives is a powerful quality spark.

I had a similiar problem it turned out be the catalytic converter. I believe there was a recall for this problem.

That would be best because if one is bad then the other wont be far behind. Good luck dont forget to rate.

I had the same problem and found that the air admission tube was badly cracked.
Since this let air enter the engine downstream of the mass airflow sensor it is not measured so the engine ECU don't send the proper amount of fuel to provide the right air/fuel mixture. At higher RPM, the vacuum in the tube is enough to close the crack and hide the problem.
I temporarly repaired it with duct tape until I get the part.

This link is to a "How To Replace an EGR Valve" video. While he is doing this on a Ford F150 pickup, the tips he gives you should translate over to your Mazda easily, especially as he talks about the stickers under the hood designed to tell you where your EGR valve and solenoid is located. Give it try...I think it will work for you.

Hi,
HOW TO INSPECT EGR VALVE
Before attempting to troubleshoot or repair a suspected exhaust gas
recirculation (EGR) system on a vehicle, the following conditions
should be checked and be within specifications.
If one or more of these conditions is faulty or operating
incorrectly, perform the necessary tests and services to correct the
problem before servicing the EGR system.
Before attempting any tests of the EGR system, visually inspect the
condition of all vacuum hoses for kinks, bends, cracks, and
flexibility. Replace defective hoses as required. Check vacuum hose
routing. (See the underhood decal or the manufacturer's service manual
for correct routing.) Correct any misrouted hoses. If the emissions
system if fitted with an exhaust-gas-recirculation valve position (EVP)
sensor, the wires routed to it should also be checked.
If the EGR valve remains open at idle and low engine speed, the idle
operation is rough and surging occurs at low speeds. When this problem
is present, the engine may hesitate on low-speed acceleration or stall
after deceleration or after a cold start. If the EGR valve does not
open, engine detonation occurs. When a defect occurs in the EGR system,
a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is usually set in the powertrain
control module (PCM) memory.
