Transmission Slipping Between 20-30 mph, after driving appx 20-25 minutes transmission slips, tachometer spikes from about 1500-4000 rpm. This happens on flat dry roads, occasionally happening in the middle of a turn. This has happened hundreds of times over the last several months. Second major problem occurs when parking. From drive, the transmission is put in reverse. A period of between 3-5 seconds passes with no engagement, then the car slams into reverse, jerking occupants forward. These problem was identified with 57,000 miles on the car.

You didn't say if you had checked your fluid level (car at normal operating temp., idling, in park, on level sirface, check level) which is about all a person can do, when automatics develop trouble..

transmission slipping could be low transmission fluid level or need a transmission fluid and filter change.if transmission fluid was real low check for transmission fluid leaks around transmission oil pan gasket or fluid leaks around cooler lines or torque converter shaft seal. if you getting steam inside cab.your heater core is leaking.if transmission fluid level okay and filter been changed could have faulty over drive switch.

Rpm spikes

it sounds like the bands on the transmission are slipping if it is an automatic trans if it is a manual the clutch is slipping if auto take to dealer. if manual adjust the clutch cable out some it connects to the transmission with a thick cable near the bell housing tighten the cable to give it less play 3 or 4 turns

While driving 55-70 mph, the rpm just comes up about 300 rpm

THE ONLY REASON THAT THE ENGINE COULD SPEED UP IS THAT THE TRANNY IS SLIPPING IN THIRD OR OVERDRIVE IF AUTOMATIC. IF IT IS A MANUAL TRANNY THE CLUTCH IS SLIPPING.

Electrical and slipping Transmission

Transmission and gauges are probably unrelated. My '98 Caravan had 2 bad solder connections on the back of the instrument cluster where the connector attached. It takes about 10 minutes to get the cluster out. The bad solder joints were easy to spot on mine. It took 2 years for me to find the problem, but only 30 minutes to fix it and it hasn't happened again since (almost a year).

When I drive my Mazda 626 (97) in high way, at about 110 KM/Hour speed. Sometime the tachometer will suddenly go up and come down (e.g. go up to 4000 RPM or 5000 RPM from normal say 3000 RPM in one or two...

Does your Mazda have a standard trans (clutch), or automatic.
If it's automatic, the tranny might be slipping, and if it's a standard shift the clutch may be slipping. Does the actual driving speed (not engine rpm's) seem to stay the same when this happens? If you are still traveling at the same speed even though the engine speeds up, it's your tranny or clutch. I don't think the timing belt and tensioner have anything to do with this. countrycurt0
