Assuming you really needed to replace the fuel pump,I would move on to the misfire. Pull any codes and Replace Ignition Coil , if code seems to point that way. Forget the gas cap, I've seen EVAP Codes set along with misfires.

What cause the engine to misfire when first start up after it been sit for a while?

Could just be a loose spark plug wire. Depending on how long it's been sitting animals tend to hide under the hood may have knocked it loose. Drive it to orileys or autozone and they can scan your computer if you have a check engine light on which in my experience with a misfire it sets off the check engine light or your gas could be old also.

Why do i hear my fuel pump on a 2004 pontiac bonneville whining up and down?

Walt, You will hear the fuel pump at times. When you take the gas cap off the fuel tank is acting somewhat as an echo chamber that is amplifying the noise of the fuel pump. Presumably the engine is ticking over when you remove the gas cap? Otherwise the fuel pump should not be running.

The fuel pump only supplies fuel on demand - obviously. The pump will run to pressurise the system to meet demand and if that demand for fuel fluctuates, the pump will run down or increase speed accordingly. This speeding up and running down of the pump is constant.

If by 'a miss' you mean that the fuel pump goes quiet for a second or so - that's normal. No demand for fuel - the pump doesn't run. That wouldn't effect the engine at tickover.

If the 'miss' is from the engine at tickover that's more than likely to be a plug.

If your car runs okay at speed and doesn't cut out and then will restart almost immediately, it sounds as though your fuel pump is okay.

Misfire

misfire come from HT leads and injectors. Check fuel pressure is correct . check HT leads ( separation is important). Check for carbon tracks and moisture in distributor cap.

Engine began to miss after overheating episode. All hoses, radiator, thermostat, and cap have been replaced. Ran fine until this time. Began to miss sporadically after cooling system...

  1. Have your timing belt checked and replaced. Sounds like it may have jumped, or is stretched.
  2. If after repairing any timing issues you are still facing this problem, it may be time to have the fuel injectors tested and the fuel pump tested and replace as necessary.

Right when car warms up it has a lower slightly rough idle with a miss every once and awhile. When I drive it, unless I push the gas to the floor, it runs with a miss and shakes the car a bit. Sounds like...

Could very well be the main relay, limiting power to all the electronics in your car, causing the problems you've mentioned. Have it repaired or replaced.

Car is putting at an idle when gas is pressed runs smoothly

sounds like either you have 2 of the wires crossed.........one is loose....probably #1 or your #1 plug needs regapped or is not tight and losing seal....all will cause a misfire and set the check engine light

I have mercury sable 2001 when the engine reach 4000 rpm start miss fire

Hi, the cause of this problem might be a faulty fuel pump. As soon as the engine is under load the fuel pump can't keep up with the demand and cause a misfire

2001 Sable gets P0401 first, then gets P0442 some miles later. When P0442 sets, so does engine check light. Car runs well. What could cause this sequence of error codes?

This could be a small evaporative system leak. Check the gas cap to be installed fully. If fully installed may need replaced.
