Is it dual tanks? it could be in the switch if it is, most of the time it is bad grounds to the tank unit. grounding the wire from the sending unit to the gauge should make it move, one way or the other

I have a 2000 Ford F350 crew cab 4x4 7.3l diesel. My fuel gauge say 3/4 and I only have only 6 gallons because i ran out of fuel. when It was running out of fuel it show 1/2 tank. help me will it be a lose ground or my sending unit from the tank.
