1996 Chev Silverado K3500 dually, no brake lights

I have a 1996 Chev Silverado K3500 dually 4WD.

The brake lights are not working (with the exception of the cab third brake light which does work). All other lights (reverse, running, turn signals, emergency flashers) work.

Checked brake fuse. No apparent problem. Tried replacing anyway. Still no brake lights.

Replaced the brake light relay under the hood. Still no brake lights.

Was told could be the brake light switch, so tried replacing that. Still no brake lights.

Have tested power in and out of the brake light switch. All good.

I'm stumped. Please help!

The brake lights are red. Neither left or right work.

The third brake light (on cab) works when brakes applied.

The hazard flashers work, front and back.

The turn signals work, front and back.

    The tail lights work.

Yes, I am aware that these all use the same bulbs, hence my problem. If it's not the brake light switch, and all of the bulbs and circuit boards work, and it all comes in on the same wire (same filament in the same bulb) why don't the brake lights work?

Check at the light socket in the rear, where your lights don't work. You need a test light or a voltage meter, and check to see that you have a groun there, power for your parking light, and power to the brake light. You should have power for the parking lights seeing that it works, and a ground. Just verify that your power for the brakes is getting to the bulb, or not. Just a good place to start.
And you are correct that if the third brake light works (top) your brake light switch is fine.

The chevys with red brake lights and turn signals do two things and I've fixeds alot of them. Looking at the tail lights with the hazard flashers on. both sides flash with nothingeles on? Or are the hazards yellow? if they're red and the third eye does work the turn signal switch is possible problem but it doesn't let the blubs and the circuit boards in the taillights out as they can fail and do some really bad stories the wires for the brakes and the turns and the hazards are the same ones and if the turns look right and the hazards look right then the turn signal switch transmites the turn too as this doesn't work part of your story can't be true

The turn signal switch has a wire going to it that may be pulled out in the collum. If all other functions work and the brake light works ( the third eye works) then the power is not getting to the turn signal switch or the switch is bad. but the hazards or the truns usally display some problem watching them function. The wire that comes hot when pushing on the brake pedel at the brake pedal switch is the same color when it gets to the turn signal switch. And you aren't conplaining about getting the car out of park as this wire does this as well. Wire pulled out or broken and the switch is alongshot

If the 3rd brake light work it shouldn't be the switch.do you have a trailer connection?if you hook a trailer up and all those lights work the wiring should be fine.could be as simple as two blown bulbs?but if you have trailer lights , most are tapped right off the taillights.probe around with the test light back there.power?ground?.....

Rear brake shoe replacement on a 98 chevy 3500 dually

If you have drums on the rer yes you do have to remove the axle its simple though you unbolt the 6-8 bolts on the end of the axle then it just simply slides out thats it there mite be some resistance but there isnt anything else holding it in. and you dont have to worry about putting it back into the same spot eather just slide it back in and line up the drum.

That was a good suggestion by Molson. Also, if you have been doing a lot of heavy hauling, have them check the strainer, which could be a problem as well.

Will a rear end out of E350 Ford interchange with a Chevy 3500 dually

Is the c/k 3500 4 wheel drive? If it is 4WD,you must retain the same gear ratios for both front and rear axles,or the transfer case will be damaged. If it is 2 wheel drive, you can install any gear you like.I believe the Ford E350 rear axle is a Dana 70,as i have rebuilt 2 of that model, along with Dana 60's.The Ford unit likely will not be a bolt in.It will probably require professionally welding new mount brackets on the Ford axle housing. The width needs to be measured from inside the brake backing plate to the other brake backing plate to see if it will physically fit.Good luck.
