Got a 1997 Silverado 7.4 vortec had the same problem couple of the terminals on the crank sensor wires were loose ended up burning out the brain lol the ECM and the crank sensor connection terminals is where I would start
all of the mods with out the cat converters will place all sensors out side the normal parameters set in the ECM
to get a result you will have to take it to a speed shop that has a chassis dyno and have them connect a computer and rebuild the parameters required for that engine
Starter motor relay , transmission range switch , wiring ! Do you know what a wiring diagram is ? How to read one ? How to use a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ?
How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit
do you know what a relay is ? how to test one .
VEHICLE RELAYS Operation Diagnosis
You can view free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html enter the vehicle info. year , make , model , engine size . Under system click on engine , then under sub system click on charging system . click search button ,one link will pop up , click on it . First diagram is starter circuir . If starts jumping at the starter the problem is on the control side . trans range switch , starter relay ,blown # 6 40 amp fuse in the under hood fuse / relay center .
Being that it is a one ton I would expect it to ride rough. It is made for hauling a heavy load. If you want to improve ride quality you will loose hauling capacity unless you spend the money for an air ride suspension system.
Have a 98 would crank and run for a second.the problem was security.the ignition switch housing and module was faulty and causing the anti theft to shut off the injectors. look at that and your headlamp fuses as well as anti theft is tied to headlamp fuse
If you have drums on the rer yes you do have to remove the axle its simple though you unbolt the 6-8 bolts on the end of the axle then it just simply slides out thats it there mite be some resistance but there isnt anything else holding it in. and you dont have to worry about putting it back into the same spot eather just slide it back in and line up the drum.
I'd double check that you have the correct plug wire going to the correct plug on the distributor. If you have a couple in the wrong place it will run but do exactly what you describe. Could be a bad plug wire too, I've had new ones be bad out of the box. (or just have a poorly crimped boot connector).
You can narrow the miss by removing plug wires one at a time and then running it to see which one(s) doesn't seem to make a difference whether it's plugged in or not.
after they get a little age on them the inghtion module and the coil can and will both do this and run good when their running. If you measure the coil with an OHM meter it could be lower than 3 OHMs in this case it'll overload the module and it'll shut down as it heats up It this is the case you'll need to replace both the coil and the module to have a reliable vehical.
