More then likely due to faulty brake pedal sensor or shift lock. when pressing the break pedal you should hear a click at the shifter even when brake pedal is lightly depressed, if there is no audible click, issue will need to be verified if due to brake pedal sensor or the actual shift lock on the shifter,

Car won't shift out of park 96 Park avenue

Are your brake lights working? Most cars require that you have the brakes applied before shifting out of park, and they rely on the brake light switch to verify that the brake is applied. If your brake lights are not working, it probably means the switch is bad, and that's why it won't shift out of park. There should be a mechanical/ emergency bypass (to allow you to shift out of park), which would be covered in your owner's manual.

My 2002 passport is stuck in drive even when in park or reverse or neutral. Could it be shift solenoid

Not likely. More like a broken shift cable. Or broken shifter. Do you still feel the clicks when shifting threw the gears?

96 town and country wont turn over and shift indicator does not show park

It sounds as if your shift cable is out of adjustment. If you remove the air filter box and the hose at the throttle body you will be able to access the transmission shift lever, on top of the ******.Loosen the cable adjusting screw that is on the lever. Pull the lever all the way to its detent position which is Park. Release the parking brake and rock the vehicle to assure that it is in Park lock. Reset parking brake. In the cab, place the Shift lever in the Park position, return under the hood and tighten the cable adjusting screw. Your van will only start when the transmission is in Park or Neutral. Hope this helps! Dan Williams

GEAR SHIFT STUCK IN PARK HAVE NO BRAKE LIGHTS

check the fuses as if the brake light fuse is blown it won`t allow the shifter to move out of park.it has a shift interlock system so the gear shift won`t accidentally be moved out of park by mistake.
