How do you take off and put on a new valve cover gasket

I recommend going out in purchasing the repair manual for this vehicle. You're saving about a hundred plus doing this job yourself.so spending $20 on a manual isn't so bad. It's a straightforward job basically a 10 millimeter socket and remove all the bolts that are holding down the valve cover. And then anything that's in its in your way to remove the valve cover. A rubber mallet will come in handy you also cause some of those valve covers can be a little hard to loosen. once you have the valve cover off clean the head and scrape cover of any remains of the old gasket.Other than that I don't know what kind of gasket this vehicle uses weather is neopran or cork.also weather there isn't a sensor safe adhesive you need with the gasket. That's why for the 20 bucks for the manual it's worth it could answer the questions that you need to know (torque specs tools etc.)to do this job correctly.some manufacturers don't recommend an adhesive usually wouldn't neopraingasket and is he is not use. But in any event with the new gasket on the valve cover and carefully place it on the engine. Once it's on then put the bolts in and tighten them in a crisscross fashion. Then put everything you took off the vehicle to give you access to the valve cover.it's a simple job you're saving yourself a bundle please get the repair manual. Good luck

1. • 1 Allow the car to cool. Disconnect the battery terminal. Remove the right side vent screen top extension. Disconnect the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and brackets.
     
   • 2 Disconnect the left hand side coil wires and spark plug wires. Remove the spark plug wires, valve cover bolts and the valve cover. Unplug the electrical connections from the intake manifold runner control actuator. Unfasten the actuator retaining the screws, right bank heated oxygen sensor front and rear.
     
   • 3 Remove the heated positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. Remove the heated oxygen sensor plug and the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor. Disconnect the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and bracket. Remove the valve cover bolts, the valve cover and the old valve cover gasket. Clean the valve cover seating area with automotive engine cleaner and place the new gasket in the gasket seating area.
     
   • 4 Replace the parts that were removed and disconnected by reversing the steps. Replace the valve cover gasket and tighten the bolts, in sequence, ensuring not to over tighten. Put back the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and bracket, the heated positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve, the heated oxygen sensor plug and the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor.
     
   • 5 Add oil to the car. Start the car and let it run at idle for a while to check for leaks..
     

more than likely you have a valve cover leak its common you will need to re move the cover
1 take out the bolts 6 i believe 7/16 socket remove the small bolts
2 pry the valve cover off
3 clean the old gaskets off the valve cover and motor
4 clean the valve cover and paint the valve cover light blue so you can see any leaks
that may happen // i dout if you will have any
5 put a small amount fo permatex (BLACK) it works well with oil and it will hold the gasket in place
once you put the gasket on the on the valve cover put a small amount on the bottom of the
gasget/// you will have permatex on both sides of the gasket
6 now you are ready to in stall tha valve cover back on the motor and put in all the bolts finger
tight once all the bolts are in you want to snug the bolts don't try to tighten the bolts to much
or you will cut the new gasket
7 now that every thing is back in check your oil level and run the engine for ten min this will set up
the new gasket and give the permatex a chance to cure

done deal

go to a parts store and buy a valve cover gasket. remove valve cover, and old gasket. carefully clean all surfaces, install new gasket and do not over tighten the bolts when you put the valve cover back on.

Yes, you need a Rocker cover (valve cover) Gasket kit. Remove the valve cover, remove all old O-rings and cover gasket, clean grooves and mating surfaces without gouging or scratching them, put the new gaskets on as per factory recommendations, tighten to the proper torque and you're done. The spark plug holes in the cover are part of the valve cover gasket kit. Any Napa, Car Quest, Pep Boys, Auto Zone will have it.

theres couple bolts on the valve cover prbly 10 take them off then pull valve cover then new new valve cover gasket on make sure scrap old gasket from valve cover and head so not to have a leak put all back togethor

valve cover gaskets are in expensive, like 20 bucks, a books that can tell you how to do it would be 25-50 and you will be able to use the book for other things.. there are usually a few long bolts going straight through your valve cover, jus take them off remove the old gasket and put new one in put them back in.. however tightening the valve cover bolts will be the only tricky part.. you may need a torque wrench and have to refer to the book to know exatly how tight they should be.. but as a rule of thumb 80-90 ft-lb of tork is usually used.. be careful when doing this cuz if you put the wrong torque on it will bend your valve covers or posibbly not seal correctly

The toyota previa uses a formed silicone gasket for the valve cover and the cover is held in place by metric shoulder bolts ( 10mm). The valve gasket leaks because you can't get enough preload on the bolts to re-seat the old gasket when it gets old and shrinks. The shoulder bolts only allow you to tighten the gasket enough to seat the shoulder on the bolt. If you continue to torque down the suspected bolts, you will snap the bolt off ( don't ask me how I know this ). You can either 1.)replace the old gasket with a new one or 2.) remove the existing bolts around the leak area and put in new metric bolts that do not have a shoulder. You may want to put in a small sleeve into the existing bolt hole but shorter than the thickness of the valve cover to account for the smaller diameter bolt. You can now torque down the bolt and get enough preload to seal the valve cover without removing the old gasket. Make sure you use a torque wrench ( in-lbs) or be very careful not to snap these small valve cover bolts.

remove the valve cover bolts. remove the valve cover. scrape off the old gasket material off the cover and the engine. put the new gasket in place and replace the bolts and tighten...dont over tighten.

There should be some bolts surrounding the valve cover(s). Take them out take the valve cover off clean it up good put new gasket on put bolts back in tighten from center out so valve cover don't warp
