GMC vehicles of that vintage had a safety switch
attached to the metal brackets under the dashboard that had a plastic plunger actuated by your pushing on the brake pedal to allow the shift mechanism to move out of park.
This prevented starting the car in a drive gear.
You had to push the brake pedal first before it would shift into gear.
On mine, I found the black vacuum hose very sensitive, and have had to remove the panel under the steering wheel so I could access that switch whenever mine did the same as yours.
God bless your efforts.

Hi JoAnn,sounds like you have a bad neutral safety switch.

  • Neutral safety switch sends a signal to the on-board computer to allow the engine to start and to engage the transmission
  • When not replaced, vehicle may experience no start and/or transmission will not shift out of park. Here's alink on how to replace it.

I have a 04 envoy slt xl won’t start none of gages work only battery light comes on, has full battery tho & won’t shift out of park

Try stepping on the brake when trying to shift with the key on. Then try starting im neutral or other gears to see if the neutral safety switch is bad in park. You may have a bad wire from the battery to power distrubution or bad ground. So many things it could be.

Is there any shift lock button near gear lever if yes than push it and give it a a try if no than I think you have you flush the gear oil and replace the gear filter too.

2008 Saturn Vue Stuck In Park. The car starts fine however when you try to shift out of park the shifter is locked up and won't budge. You have to restart the car multiple times to get the shifter...

these have a safety system so the shifter won`t go into any gear unless the brake is pushed(indicating someone sitting in the drivers seat),if the brake lights aren`t working this indicates that the fuse that operates the shift lock solenoid and brake lights is not working and needs replacing.check the fuses and replace the fuse and things will probably return to normal.

It started with the loss of my cruise control. I had no problems with shifting out of park. Came home put the car in to reverse and shut it down. 30 minutes later, started the car, I can move the lever...

Sounds like the cable from the shift lever to the transmission has broken or come loose. You may have to get it towed in to a dealer to have it fixed.

GEAR SHIFT STUCK IN PARK HAVE NO BRAKE LIGHTS

check the fuses as if the brake light fuse is blown it won`t allow the shifter to move out of park.it has a shift interlock system so the gear shift won`t accidentally be moved out of park by mistake.

My 2007 seabring won't shift out of park... Car

The car is probably on a steep hill and a lot of pressure is on the park pawl in the automatic transmission. If this is the case, a hard sudden pull should release it. Make sure the brake is on. When parking on a hill in the future use the parking brake before placing the lever in park.
