Before taking this problem to the dealer, you might check this quick fix. I had the same problem on my 2007 Pontiac G6 Gt Convertible, and just resolved it.
First, you can access your trunk by disconnecting, and then reconnecting your negative battery terminal-this clears the safety code momentarily allowing the trunk to be opened using your trunk release button.
After you have the trunk open, check the wiring harness located in the top right corner of the trunk lid where the hinge is attached to the trunk lid. My wiring harness had come loose, allowing a wire to get stuck in the hinge, resulting in a cut wire-it was a red one. I spliced the wire back together, taped it up with electrical tape, and then secured the harness to the hinge assembly so wires couldn't come loose again. The problem resolved immediately with no further issues. Good luck.
This post was an amazing accurate post and helped find the EXACT issue with my 2007 G6 Convertible! The trick about pulling the negative batter cable was something that I wasn't aware of! Once I could open the trunk, I found the micro switch that had the cut wire (from the hinge).. Thank you for all of this great information!!
I searched for a year with same problem. Found broken wire at rear trunk latch going to the lobster claws. Was causing trunk not to open and top not secure message.
Spot on advice! Problem solved.

Hi Deborah , Your going to have to take to the dealer , there is a DTC - diagnostic trouble code stored in the ( FTC ) folding top control module . Such as this one
DTC B1296
S14 is the Folding Top Front Latch Actuator Position switch. The Folding Top Control (FTC) Module uses S14 to determine when the top is latched in both the open and closed positions. S14 closes and pulls the signal circuit low when the top is latched.
DTC 1296 01: Movable Roof Header Unlatched Sensor Circuit short to battery
DTC 1296 06: Movable Roof Header Unlatched Sensor Circuit short to ground or open
DTC 1296 58: Movable Roof Header Unlatched Sensor Circuit incorrect reaction after event
DTC 1296 59: Movable Roof Header Unlatched Sensor Circuit circuit/component protection time out
Circuit/System Description
S1 is the Folding Top Header Latch Cylinder Sensor. The Folding Top Control (FTC) Module uses S1 to determine if the Folding Top Header Latch Cylinder is in the latched or unlatched position. S1 is a hall effect sensor that becomes active when the cylinder is in the unlatched position.

Your best bet is have the system checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ! If it showed a message top not secured there is a DTC stored in the control module ! there are 24 possible DTC'S
