What would cause a 2003 Chevy Malibu with an automatic transmission to go in gear but not move in any?

The speedometer is ran off a sensor in the trans. First thing is check the fluid . There should be a dip located on top of the trans. It might be way down in there. Should be colored red or yellow. Start the vehicle then check the dipstick, if low add fluid. Low fluid could cause it to slip and and not engage. If it's full , note the color of the fluid. Red is good, brown, not so good and black is bad. I'm talking about the color of the fluid, how many miles? Also did any particular gear go out first? Most trans . Failures begin with loss of reverse first. Not always but that could be a good indication. If fluid black and burnt trans,. Is shot. Smell the fluid to detect a burnt smell. Hopefully it was just low. But given the sparse info its hard to say. If full and red or brown also most likely an internal prob.

My car cut's when am driving,it stops pulling, when i step on the accelerator only the rave counter moves the, speedometer doesnt move.when you stop for sometime again it picks up

If it's an automatic, I think your transmission is gone. Done. Done in.
If the engine wants to roar, but the legs won't move, well, it's the transmission. When the fluid inside it gets hot again, the gears start slipping.
That's my take on it, humphrey, but of course check the fluid level and quality or appearance and smell, you know, before you do anything. If it was real low on fluid, like over a couple of quarts or even one, you might get lucky and keep it full and not have any more problem. If the fluid is real dark, dark brown or dark red, and has a distinctly burnt smell, ...that's very not good. The fluid should be clear and red or pink in color. Have someone confirm or not if your transmission is bad. good luck.

Trans mission all the sudden quit workin i pulled out of the gas station it started slipping then it was gone nothing it wont move its like its in neutral

This is not good news ... you already knew that. Your trans needs a overhaul ... you know that as well. It is not likely you can do anything ... with the possible exception that your trans is out of fluid. You will have to check that ... with the engine running and the gear selector in Park, check the level by pulling the dip stick. The fluid should not smell burnt ... it should be pretty pink or red and it should be in the cross hatch area. If it is not, add fluid until it comes up to the proper level.

Before you add any fluid, put your foot on the brake and run through the gears then back to park to check. DO NOT OVER FILL - it is a bear to get the excess fluid out and it will have to come out if you over fill.

2001 Dodge grand caravan sport. Transmission slipping/ jerking. Seems to run only in second gear... still slips and jerks. Smells of burnt trans fluid and the level is low on the dipstick.

I need a little mor info. But the reason for the being stuck in 2nd gear is because when something goes wrong with the tranny. it goes into "LIMP" mode wich keeps the trans. from shifting out of 2nd when you are going forward. It does sound like your trans. is gone out though.

TRANSMISSON PROBLEMS

if its manual sounds like your clutch could be slipping does car smell of burt clutch?
check cluth adjustment
may need new clutch
do stall test with hand brake on, foot (heel-toe) on brake and accel pedal to about 2000rpm then let out clutch and car should stall if engine revs go down and engine still runs but you can rev causing slip and you will now smell what slipping burnt clutch is replace it.

if its auto check trans oil level and what does it look like red-good
darker red to black-bad often smells burnt also possibly new trans required.

Transmission in drive seems to slip into neutral, then back into gear.

Does the fluid look brown and smells burnt or bright clear red.Sounds like the trans is on its way out.Once they start to burn and slip it coats the bands with contaminants that resist holding to the drums when engaging added to that the fact that they are worn a bit after 8 years of driving. If the fluid is not clear red try a service (filter, gasket and fluid )only you can tell wether to do that first or replace outright

Trany would slip at high speed and sometimes if i got on it hard. It was just doing it maybe once every 4/6 months, until one day i was driving to work. I was goig 75 mph and all of a sudden i lost every...

Have the vehicle scanned for diagnostic trouble codes, and repair any codes.More than likely the trans needs a rebuild. If the fluid smelled burnt, then obviously clutches or bands are burnt inside the trans.Changing the fluid just got rid of the smell, whatever is burnt is still hurnt. It is best to stop driving the vehicle,as continuing to drive it will just cause more damage to whatever is damaged. Those transmissions are prone to pump problems too.
