Tank full of gas. Register red E for empty. message read fuel comp error
SOURCE: 1997 Ford Taurus reading code P0761
The reason your gas milage went down is because you are not going into 4th gear or overdrive the most likely problem is shift solenoid 3 but it could be a wiring or pcm concern.I would test ss3 and go from there.Canging of SS3 is fairly involved and you would need a decent mechanical ability to perform this task.

SOURCE: filling gas tank
There is a vent pipe that runs along the fill pipe, they get kinked and cause this concern (tank can't vent air when filling), the only fix is to replace the fill pipe assembly.
SOURCE: Gas Gauge not reading correctly
The most likely culprit is the sending unit in the tank. They are relatively easy to change, as long as you don't have much fuel in the tank. It's a mechanical unit that has a float that raises and lowers with the fuel level, however with age, the floats can develop leaks and no longer float, of the electronic portion of the unit can go bad and not register the proper level. They are replaced and an entire unit, so it doesn't matter which happened, you will need to change the fuel tank sending unit.

Sounds like the rear fuel pump in the tank is not working and the float or sender is bad also. check to see if the rear pump is working should make a humming noise.

Sound like your fuel tank selector valve is bad.it's located on the frame rail between the tanks and the filter.
Also, keep in mind that the rear in tank pump is bad. The dual function reservoir is mechanical. The pressure from the in tank pump switches the mechanical valves; the dual function reservoir serves two purposes:
1. Mechanical Selector valve for the tanks.
2. Holds extra fuel in the reservoir so if the gas tank is low on fuel and you go around a turn and the low pressure pump can't pump any fuel, the high pressure pump can still draw fuel from the reservoir.
Read this thread which explains how to test the in tank pumps: ford-trucks/88-5-0-no-start-fuel.

I'm assuming you mean the yellow check engine light and not the low fuel light and I see what you said engine light so what I think has happened is that your gas filter maybe clogged up and needs to be changed and because of this the fuel pump driver module is setting a code (check engine light)that the right amount of fuel pressure and fuel is not reaching the throttle body is the engine idling rough or sputtering on acceleration?I would take off the battery cables to reset the computer (only do this if you have a key fob remote control for the alarm)after reconnecting the cables press the remote button when the alarm sounds so it doesn't go into theft mode and start the car drive it around and see if it resetsa code again if so get some B12 chemtool fuel injection cleaner by BERRIMAN AT AUTOZONE and poor two(2) cans in the tank and fill it up with fresh fuel to get a now higher mix and drive the car for a while there maybe varnish which gets like a glue/sticky paste/or bad dirty gas in the tank this will help dissolve the gunk and help the fuel pump to get the right amount of fuel through and will also clean your injectors there is also a spray version of this productif you see a brown residue inside the throttle body use the spray to soften and dissolve then wipe with a rag and then spray again while increasing the rpm's(moving the throttle lever or some one pressing the gas peddle this will get it out and the B12 COMING FROM THE TANK WILL COMPLETELY CLEAN YOUR SYSTEM OUT after a day or so if the problem keeps coming back and the gas filter was changed a new fuel pump might be in order here your car is now most likely 12-13years old depending on actual production date on you door sticker and it maybe getting weak or the amount of dirt in the tank from not changing the filter and using cheap gas that has no detergents in it will really do a car in and for the $ use save pinching pennies on fuel you will pay $$$$$ X IN REPAIR BILLS so try what I posted and get back to me and we'll take it from there cheap gas also gives poor mpg's so stop using it if you are good luck Stephen
I almost forgot this also sounds like the sender in the tank went or is stuck from the varnish or dirt in the fuel the empty reading on the gauge/the fuel pump driver module is behind the rear seat or in the quarter panel and looks like this check the plug to make sure you haven't pushed something against it causing a bad connection Stephen
some Taurus's have this and some don't so if you don't see it yours doesn't check this site for the fuel relay at the power distribution box under the hood if you don't have the owners manual go to ford owners and register for free then download your manual and in roadside emergencies you will find both fuse box diagrams to help you get the right relay and fuses to check Stephen
