My '98 Plymouth Voyager (129,000 miles) looses power but only very sporadically and idles erratically- usually when going up steep grade for an extended length of time. "Service Engine Soon" light also comes on and off, sometimes for months, sometimes for weeks. My mechanic replaced the fuel pump, the map sensor, fuel filter, and I have replaced the computer...still runs the same...acts like it's not getting enough gas.

there is a starter relay in the relay box. check for power going to the relay box , also have your check for voltage going to the starter . check for ing feed at the small wire also . before replacing any more parts , i would think that all off this was done the frist time?

Just trowing some suggestions out there, but, I would check the idle air control valve (solenoid) or the throttle position sensor. If they check out then my last guess would be the map sensor or the vaccuum to the map sensor. Hope I was able to help. Best wishes.

You may have build up in the intake where the throttle plate is, so it would have to be cleaned and the egr valve could be stuck or the purge canister may be defective. It could be a vachum line off the engine somewhere or even loose intake bolts or the egr valve is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced and or cleaned.

You don't mention what engine you have ( there are 4 cyl, or 2 v-6 choices 3.0L or 3.3L available for that year). The water pump costs anywhere from $50 to $80, depending where you buy it, labor is supposed to take about one hour (access to the water pump is through the wheel well, after removing the plastic liner). There are other things that can raise the cost: how old is your coolant? This is a good time to have it changed if it needs it, what is the condition of the serpentine belt? It has to be removed to replace the pump, so again, if it needs to be changed, this is the time to do it. Dealers are charging about $100 an hour in my area, private garages less, and there will be additional charges for 'environmental' concerns, which is basically properly disposing of parts and fluids. So, the best thing to do is check with your local dealer and service stations and get an estimate on the work, and if anything else is needed (coolant, belt, etc) for a price in your area. With the economy not doing well, there should be plenty of repair facilities eager to give you an estimate. Good luck.
