When my 1988 toyota camry sits for a day or two without driving, the first initial start does not fire-up as I turn the key. I have to hold the key in the start position and the car will eventually start

All cars require a little priming. Try this, turn the key on, let it sit for about 30 seconds then try and start your car. When you first turn the key, the fuel pump will begin pushing fuel. My Mustang does the same thing when its been cold. Of course, in Tucson it does not get cold very often.

1988 Ford Taurus hard start problem

Change the coolant sensor located close to the thermostat housing. This is easy but do not over tighten it. You will have the same problem if you do. Tighten till it does not leak only.Good luck!

Cold Starting

You have a cold start injector that is controled by coolant temp and more than likely the sensor, which is located center of intake, between #2 and 3 injector...it looks a bit like a reg. temp. sensor and will have either blue or black electrical harness connected to it. This sensor 'tells' the cold start sensor, a fifth injector for cold starting, when coolant is below a certain temp and gives extra gas. Try to find one at a junkyard, otherwise, www.getcoolparts.com about $80 new. Better yet, buy a Bentley manual and there's diagnostics using a multimeter on diagnosing specifically. I have an 88 but it is an N/A, not a turbo and is an 8v...if your's is a 16 valve, look for sensor in same spot but under fuel rail/injector area.
