Find and check the reversing lamp switch, it may be on the gear linkage or on the side of the gearbox/transmission.
you should a 12volt feed whenever the ignition is turned on. If you dont, recheck all fuses with a test lamp ( which you can buy from any auto parts store) and check the wiring for an open circuit or break in the wire. If power is available, check the output of the switch by testing each wire in turn with the ignition on and the gear shift in reverse ( dont have the engine running for this).
If you cannot find an output, replace the switch. If you find an output, check the wiring all the way back to the reversing lamps with the test lamp by carefully stabbing the correct wire until the test lamp no longer lights up. this means the break is bwtween where the tested the wire and it lit up and where it did not light up.
Repair or replace as needed.

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 v8 reverse lights won't work.

I have 2010 and all books on jeeps, (88 to 2010)
did you check all fuses first (small)?
what transmission, AUTO?
mine has NAG1,(german MB made)
my answers are only USA , not else where, and you never told that. WJ model jeep it is. unless Diesel.
2wd or 4wd drive? may not matter but... not told

PRNDL switch must close for R or there will be no reverse lamps but the gear shift works, and drives reverse so.
did you forget to scan the PCM (TCM) with a scan tool and see OMG TRS errors? first,???
the car moves in reverse but the reverse pressure sensor is bad
or the backup fuse. F20 named. blew.

I'd look first after fuse for trailer hitch wring hacks, sure would
then scan the PCM next.
this is not 1980 with old easy to fix bad external TRS switches.

I have the real service manual
the PRNDL in R, the box goes to R and drives
but the pressure switch (or fuse) in the box that signals I am in REVERES is failing, Scan it and see what's up?
get a shop to scan the PCM even for free.

wj-undefined-undefined-0.jpg from the factory real service manual above schematic;.
the fuse must be good F20. ok>? if is scanning is next.

the shifter tells the TCM to go to Reverse
the Rev solenoid, energizes and is tested to see it did at SOL pins
then the reverse clutch closes and car moves in reverse.
the TCM quickly sees if the Pressure for sensors, agrees it is REVERSE and fails the back up lamp fails and DTC errors are stored.
not scanning the PCM you miss all of that.
it is a double fail safe design, and also rules the park lockout too.
if fuse is good the switch left side is failing or OMG all reverse lamps are burned out or the wire to them are cut
a tech checks all that out, using a voltmeter and is covered in the

After switching the fuse and replacing the bulbs the reverse lights won't work.

if you changed the right fuse then you could have a bad neutral switch not working to turn on the reverse lights or power or ground is lost going to the bulbs either a bad wire or bad sockets this will have to be checked out with a test light.

My 1994 toyota Corolla will not switch out of park to reverse or drive and the brake lights won't come on no matter how hard I press on the brakes. I have changed the brake light switch and even...

There is a small plasic acess cover (1/2" x1/2") on the base of the shifter. Pry it open and press the button. You should immediately be able to shift. The button is needed because the sensor on your brake pedal is broken (won't activate your brake lights either). Use the button on your shifter to get your car home or to the mechanic so you can get the brake switch fixed. Remember whern you drive you have no brake lights. -Mark

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT and the brake lights and reverse lights don't work. I don't have a diagram of the fuse panel. We have checked everything else.

Have you checked under the hood in the engine compartment? I do believe there is a fuse box there with fuse for the brake/reverse.

2000 toyota camry check engine light. trac light on. when i step on breaks reverse square indicator on dash board goes on. No reverse lights and rear light indicator on.

wires are pinched and shorting together near the left (drivers side) trunk hinge. brake light power is feeding back through the reverse light wiring. this will also turn on the check engine light with a neutral safety switch malfunction code as the computer also sees this voltage in the reverse light circuit. Find and repair the wiring, pull the EFI fuse in the panel under the hood to clear the code. Hope this helps
