Tailgate will not unlock

You have a 3rd generation 4runner. A second generation 4runner parts will not work on yours. You need 3rd gen parts. Although I have a second gen 4runner. Most of your parts will work on my truck. Trying to do what your asking is next to impossible without some custom fabrication

not really. it is best done with two people. remove the inside paneling, roll the window down and open the tailgate. then use a phillips screwdriver and push down the side tabs so the tailgate thinks it closed and roll the window up, have the second person hold the glass. You now have access to change the key cylinder.

put the doorlocks on the side of your tailgate into the locked position, then you will be able to retract the window. Once that is done, grab a screwdriver and unlock those locks so you can close the tailgate.

No there is no bypass. The Motor in my tailgate crapped out on me last year partly to do with a rusted out tailgate that let water in! I replaced my tailgate, but in my research found that the only way to get the window down was to remove the inside panels on the tailgate, un screw the cover plate, and then unbolt the motor to allow the window to drop enough to open the tailgate. Once the tailgate is down it will be easier to see the internals and remove the motor. Hope this helps you

sorry to tell you but the rubber4 in the tail gate motor gear always packs it in the covers need to be removede and motor replaced ,actually if i remember correctly i think the left rear window motor will fitt straight in

toyota's are prone to wiring rot. a Local toyota dealer has told me (with the same problem) to chop the middle of the pannel off for the tailgate to get into the wiring. the connectors may have rotted off. if you find a solution, let me know.

REMOVE THE REAR TRIM PANEL ON THE TAILGATE AND SEE IF THE MOTOR IS GETTING 12 VOLTS AND A GOOD CHASSIS GROUND CONNECTION, MANY TIMES THE WIRING HARNESS THAT GOES IN TO THE TAILGATE DEVELOPES A OPEN/BROKEN WIRE FROM THE REPEATED OPENING AND CLOSING OF THE TAILGATE, THE WIRE BREAKS INSIDE THE PLASTIC INSULATOR AROUND THE WIRE, SO IT IS NOT APPARENT ON VISUAL INSPECTION, REQUIRES THE USE OF AN OHM METER AND A VOLT METER.

if its the back tailgate window you remove the cover that hides everything inside the door and use some tape to stick the window shut while removing the window mechanisim and then undo the motor its only held on with a few screew's and replace and put it back togeather and should be all good

There is a saftey built into the tailgate that will interupt the ground to the switch in the center console with the tailgate open. This keeps the operator from trying to roll the window up with the tailgate open. If you have no ground to the rear window switch it is most likely the tailgate safety switch. If it is like my '88 it is built into the drvers side tailgate latch.

lower the tailgate window ALL THE WAY before pulling the lock.
