2000 Mercury Villager w/ heat, no heat, & temp gauge flux

It takes about 5 minutes for my van temp guage to reach the middle(which it usually is at), but for the last few times I have driven it will suddenly go to the top (over Heat), but when I turn the heater on there is no hot air...after about a minute or two it goes back to mid point again.  It also sounds as if the fan is running...I sense a sensor problem...can someone help me out please.  The thermostat is fine, as is the radiator.

Coolant level is fine, no leaks, head gasket fine

  • calmtouch166 Apr 29, 2009

Hi Chuck, it is not overheating, the guage moves up to the highest point but the van is not overheating...that is why I was wondering if there is a sensor that I can look at that may be the cause of this.

Appreciate all insight posted.  Will let you know what I come up with tomorrow.

Have you checked the coolant level in the radiator? Take the radiator cap off (when the engine is not running and cold), and look in the radiator not the overflow tank. Are there any codes from the OBDII?

Sorry to ask the obvious, but how is the coolant level? What you describe can be caused by low coolant level, which will cause the engine to run hot, and coolant level will be too low to circulate through the heater core, so, no heat even though the engine runs hot.

You have air trapped in the system.
Park facing uphill (on car ramps if you have them).
with cold engine, remove radaitor cap and fill radiator.
Fill reservoir.
leave cap on loose.
Turn on heater.
start engine and run until upper radiator hose gets hot (meaning thermostat has opened).
Check coolant level and top off. Repeat until temp gauage reads normal and heat is coming from heater ducts.

Trust me, you have low coolant. There is actually an air bleed on th etop of the engine, but I did not mention that as it could break trying to loosen it.

The reason you get air trapped is because the highest point of coolant in the engine is higher than the opening of the radiator. That's why I asked you to park uphill, on ramps if you can. That raises the radiator opening. The cap has to be loose so you can "Burp" the air out of the system.

After you are done, tighten the cap. The top hose must be very hot because that is where the hot coolant comes out of the engine and goes into the radiator.

If you are overheating and the is no heat out of your heater there is air in the cooling system. Check the radiator level when it's cold and check the level in the overflow tank as well.

The only other sugggestion I have is to check the water pump. I had a 1993 Villager but I can't remember if the waterpump was external and driven by a belt or if it was buried and driven by the timing belt. Check the condition of the belts and tension. good luck, cb

Heater issue

This sounds like a thermostat that is fully open all the time. It allows the engine coolant to warm when sitting still (no air being forced thru the radiator), but even that goes away when moving, since the air through the radiator will remove that heat from the coolant. Does you van have a temp gauge? Is so, at full operating temp. most vehicles have coolant temps of 180-195 degrees F, depending on the thermostat installed. Anything less indicates a thermostat that is starting to malfunction.

My 1999 villager heater is not working you get a little heat the higher the engine rpm. and i have got the heater to work and its so hot you can't hardly hold your hand next to it. but then when you take...

Could be the heater valve is not opening very far. Could be the heater core is mostly plugged with rust. Could be the thermostat is not closing. Do you have a temp gauge on the dash? Does the engine reach normal temp in about two miles of driving?

Temp. guage will flux up and down for no apparent reason. Van still runs fine, but will be with out heat when guage is low.

check for coolant leak in system, if ok, replace thermostat. make sure water pump is working properly.

No heat in my villager

you have air trapped in the engine. very common. park van uphill, fill radiator & reservoir, turn on heater, leave cap loose. wait for engine to warm up to burp air.
