SOURCE: 2003 Ford Explorer back door latch will not open

Mine just did the exact same thing. The latch may be moving freely because it is not hooked to the latching mechanism anymore. In my case, the handle had broken where the handle hooks to the rod that operates the mechanism. Go to the Ford dealer and buy a new handle. Here in S.C. it was $24. You can't get this at the parts houses. Start by removing the plastic "Ford" cover that is over the liscense plate lights. You then have to remove the aluminum rivets that hold the handle to the tailgate from the outside and remove the broken latch. Remove the pull handle loop on the interior side of the tailgate (2 screws), unsnap the inside plastic tailgate interior panel, and pull down the black plastic sheeting that is underneath the panel to make access to the mechanism inside of the tailgate. There is also a hard plastic cover that you will see that needs to be pulled loose to open another access hole. Install the new tailgate latch handle by sliding back into the mounting holes and attach with two 10-32 screws and nuts. The new handle will come with a new yellow rod attachment piece on the handle. You will see inside of the tailgate a small rod hanging down, most likeky it will have the same rod attachment piece as the one on the new handle. Note the position of the yellow piece on the rod, as you will connect the new piece in the same place. Once the rod is hooked up, relubricate the metal mechanism with a light machine oil, replace the black plastic cover, replace the black plastic sheeting, (secure with a small amount of duct tape), replace the tailgate interior panel, replace the pull handle loop, shut tailgate, replace "Ford" cover over lights, and you're done!

SOURCE: F150 third door top lock won't release

there's a cable that runs from the door mech up to the top latch, need to pull down on this cable to release the top latch. Only way I could pull down enough to release was through the hole just left of the opening for the mech...cable is attached to the door frame with plastic tie wrap...pop this out so the cable is free in there and then just pry down with a screwdriver...make sure your pulling the handle at the same time. Once the door is open, it's easy to see what happening, most likely the cable is stretched out too much. I just ordered the part from Ford, the cable and top latch come as one part...about $60.

How do I removed the tailgate door liner panel on a 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara JB?? There is no inner door latch to be removed. We cannot open the rear door as outer handle has broken. Help....many thx

The top bezel pops off. There are usually 2 screws to remove from the top of the bottom bezel on each side. start popping the bottom bezel off the hatch. It won't come out. Screws on the bottom. But you can get if off enough to reach down and grab the latch rod or latch to release the hatch. Yes the latch is at the bottom. And it has levers to move to open the hatch. Once open, remove the screws to remove the bezel, then replace the latch.

Tailgate won't open on 2008 territory I can open the glass but there is no visible override for door and I can't see how to remove trim with door closed. Anyone know how to fix this please?

The top trim pops off. The bottom will pop off at the top of it only, may be a screw on each side to remove. The rest is guessing. Once the top of the bottom panel is loose, reach down and feel for the release for the latch. The latch usually goes left to right. Once open you can remove the remaining screws and replace the latch, if necessary.

2005 dodge Durango rear door hatch won't open. how do I fix this?

Most of them I fix, the latch is bad. It's electrical. Some times it the wires. Usually the wires break at the top where the wires go from the door to the body. First climb in the back and see if there is a plug at the bottom/center of the door panel. If there is, remove it and use a screw driver, go left to right and catch the latch arm to release the door. If not, them remove the upper door panel around the window. It pops off. Start at the sides, the the top. Remove the screws on both side of the bottom piece(hidden by the top piece). Then pop the top of the bottom piece off. You wont get it out because there are screws on the bottom. Then you have to reach down and find the release arm and open the door to finish taking the panel off. Remove the bolts for the latch and replace it. Check the wires first. You will need a volt/ohm meter to check for power and ground.

99 ford f150 extended door doesn't open. It seems that the latch on top of the door is stuck or disconnected from the handle.

Remove the interior door panel this can be done with the door closed. peel back the moisture barrier, look inside the door and you will see a latch mechanism with two cables next to it, the top cable releases the top latch and the bottom cable releases the bottom latch, the top latch cable is probably not mounted to the latch (anchored) you will probably have to replaace it with a new one, then it should work fine. Hope this helps, let me know
