Shudder ? when I apply reverse

Like answer #1, when I bought my 1993 Jeep Cherokee, one of the first things I ended up doing was go to & join the
cherokeeforum.com, i.e. cherokee-forum-dot-com....

I've found that whenever I need advise, or answers to any questions with my vehicles, I look for the forum for that vehicle. 99.9% of the time the folks in the forums give you honest answers..... I even subscribe to a few YouTube Channels, like the one for my 93 Cherokee. That guy is not only smart when it comes to 1990s-2000s Jeep Cherokee's/XJs, he's always doing some sort of repair or modification to one of his Cherokee's or Grand Cherokee's..... why not say, this,
my shift lever shows.
PRNDL (this is called and automatic)
drive is dead, low is dead, Reverse works. only.
in drive its reverse,
in low its reverse.
this can be a simple bad ,dead shift cable.
all it takes is looking at end of cable to find this truth, 2 persons, 1 shifts, other LOOKS. bingo.
or not. if not the cable the box is toast.

this is called a manual transmission. a stick.
gear 1,2,3,4,5,fails, but R, reverse is all i get out of my manual trans, (rare is hens teeth but fixed many like it) bad shift rails, or detents.

You have weak clutch plates that need to be replaced. 1st and reverse gear plates are in the same group in the clutch drum assembly

if you cant rebuild then off to the tranny shop

Give a try by change your transmission/filters and Transfer case oil.

hi on the gear box is a sensor for drive slect might need replacing

is it diesel engine?if so chech ur heater plugs

If you have a master and/or slave cylinder, the tell-tale signs of it going out is you start having problems with it going into reverse then into first. The problem advances rather quickly if this is the problem. First, I would thy aligning the pulley where the fan(?) belt is jumping over it and adjusting the tension ever so slightly. Good luck. I hope it's not the master/slave cylinder. Oh, you might also try to eliminate where the linkage comes to hook onto the engine and be sure it is securely on the arm and that the linkage cable itself is not stretched or worn.

Have you looked at all your checked your universal joints & your front hubs as you may have a small problem with your hubs.
the best way to test this is to lift the Jeep off all 4 wheel then do a full Visual check & test on your Jeep with it running & not running.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THE JEEP IS UP SAFE.
before getting under it.
