My 1996 jeep Cherokee xj will sputter out and die when I put it in drive but when I put it in reverse it will stay running and driving

my guess is the gearing , that reverse has is very low. and with lower gearing a weaker engine can run id bet you if you use your right foot, on the throttle as you go to drive, it will move, or use L gear. the sputter, is not related to the transmission Sputter is gross misfiring of the engine, 4.0L?? what engine? and the top cause of that. is not getting a tune up. spark plugs. ever do those in 10 long years.' or spark wires>? filters, fluids and spark? a tune up. the Jeep runs a map sensor, so does not sputter with air leaks. the jeep IAC can stick. and not hold an idle ,in drive. but you can with a fast right foot, if not , its gross misfire for sure. your right foot is not gas its air when you press the throttle you add air and the EFI matches air with fuel. in that order so if it still sputters, is not the lack of air. see?> spark is next,. for 100 years folks avoid tuneups, is that you? the classic cause?

1996 cherekee 4lt cold starting idles good warms up idles rough. exhaust fums stink. fueling up spark plugs .speedo289000klm'can any one help

is the problem only on a cold engine, hot or both? is the hot engine reaching and holding 180F or more as it must?> its running rich and that is misfire. lots of causes for rich. the tests are easy in shop with tools.
  1. a full tuneup.
  2. fuel pressure to high we, use a gauge. (FPR bad?)
  3. leaking injectors.
  4. ECT failure, scan it and must read 180f, hot, if at 180f hot.?
  5. this takes 5 min work on any scan tool (real)
  6. map hose clogged. or leaking. the Map sensor must not be blocked in any way to the plenum vacuum. or it will lie and it will run real bad.
  7. on a hot engine, the 02 sensors can fail, or is good and the exhaust cracks in the header do that. on mine it did 3 times.
cracks in the exh header, there must not he any leaks in that header (or bad gaskets) or the 02 lies. , goes to 0volts and then engine runs rich as a piggy. (my scan tool shows this is seconds, 02 flat-lined at 0v. all cars, with 02 do that. with that issue. 02 means oxygen sensor, the front one, not the rear one.

you have wired something wrong by sounds of it. And maybe blown some fuse so check all fuses inside and under bonnet see if any have blown.

No spark I have replaced coil, plugs.wires, crankshaft postion sensor, pcm

Did you check power an grounds ? go to www.bbbind.com for free wiring diagrams . Then go to you tube an check out some basic electrical trouble shooting videos . Rather then just replacing parts, learn how the ignition system works .

Getting a P0320 crank position sensor reference circuit code

Well you are right in thinking the problem is RPM related, but it could be what the sensors are "seeing" rather than a faulty sensor. Or it could be in the wiring back to the engine computer. You would need to watch the data stream from the sensors with a scanner to troubleshoot it. The computer is not getting the signal it should from one of the two sensors, or the signals are not in sync.

How do I REPLACE SHIFT CABLE

rtm? no symptoms so i must guess, ill say , cant shift. and is not park lock out causing that. want to read the manual or me to you.'? ill guess you. http://www.jeep4x4center.com/knowledge-base/index.htm?utm_source=cj#service click 1996 to 2001 it replaces like all cables do detach both ends and remove it. if clamps seen those too. what matters is adjustment is needed. some have 2 cables, one to gear box and one to ignition switch. Chapter 21, page 150 states REMOVAL (1) Shift transmission into Park. (2) Remove shift lever bezel and necessary console parts for access to shift lever assembly. (3) Disconnect cable at shift lever and feed cable through dash panel opening to underside of vehicle. (4) Raise vehicle. (5) Disengage cable eyelet at transmission shift lever and pull cable adjuster out of mounting bracket. Then remove old cable from vehicle. INSTALLATION (1) Route cable through hole in dash panel. Fully seat cable grommet into dash panel. (2) Place the auto transmission manual shift control lever in "Park" detent (rearmost) position and rotate prop shaft to ensure transmission is in park. (3) Connect shift cable to shifter mechanism by snapping cable retaining ears into shifter bracket and press cable end fitting onto lever ball stud. (4) Place the floor shifter lever in park position. Ensure that the pawl is seated within the confines of the adjustment gauge clip. (5) Snap the cable into the transmission bracket so the retaining ears are engaged and connect cable end fitting onto the manual control lever ball stud. (6) Lock shift cable into position by pushing upward on the adjusting lock button. (7) Remove and discard the shift cable adjustment gauge clip from the park gate of the shifter. easy?

Can you tell me where the asd relay is located

one more Guessyah question, where is... easter egg hunts if you read the manual its clear. (posted 100s of times here) or read the door index in the PDC box it lists the ASD there., 1993 to NOW. here we go posted 100s of times. the ASD can drop out for 8 reasons,, scanning the PCM finds that easy. if you dont scan it ,i bet you never find why it drops. gas engines,(answered) here is page from chapter 8w-10-7, free to look) http://www.jeep4x4center.com/knowledge-base/index.htm?utm_source=cj#service now the relay. 25820021-l14j4fdleibzw1xgq2q0eyq3-2-0.jpg my guess, (hey no symptoms posted, so....) asd skool http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/ASD.html there is no need to post complex PDC wiring using words, omg hard.... the link1 above has the full schematic, every inch off it. read the schematic and see that the PCM controls the ASD ! at all times. and has been posted here over 100 times, ever search here? see those?

My jeep runs for a few minutes then stops(stalls) seems to lose earth(ground) circuit for ignition and fuel pump

1996, XJ the books are free, to read on this car. ask. is this the 4.0L ? I-6? all jeeps 1993 to now have a feature called ASD relay and all stall every 3 seconds. (or at anytime !) if one of 8 failures happen. the first step is to scan it, on dead engine,, or stalling engine the PCM tells you why it dropped the ASD, the 7- 8 reasons. lacking that simple tool, you get to do this the long hard way. is that you>? (no judgement but not one poster here wants to use tools, it seems) so read this page. http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/ASD.html most of the failures can not be tested with a $10 voltmeter. if you scan it, it will tell you. now the pump, if the ASD drops the pump does not get 12vdc power. if fact the PCm will even test the pump relay as it turns it on oops the relay was commanded on but the relay output is dead. if you measure ground at the pump with the meter black lead at battery minus and red to pump ground and the volts is 0v all time time?, cranking then the ground is NOT bad. (earth) (for sure) but the hot line, that is a CONTROLLED line so car will not crash then burn... regs. by law. if the 12vdc is dead to pump cranking, the relay is bad! (can be) or the PCM is cutting it on PURPOSE> , as all EFI systems do. that is why we have scan tools to see WHY..
