When I first noticed a problem, before it started to smoke, I heard a high pitched whine from under the hood. The next day when I started it, it would smoke and when I accelerate, more smoke comes out. The smoke does not smell sweet, more rich and the smoke looks white. There is a slight loss of power. Where the downpipe meets the turbo there is a crack and after the car is running, a little bit of smoke comes from there also..

Do you think it is due to that crack? What should I do to see what needs to be fixed?

  • h3ath3r678 Jan 08, 2009

yes its smoking out of the tail pipe, it smells rich but the smoke isnt blue or black.

  • h3ath3r678 Jan 08, 2009

Thank you, my car is at the mechanic now but I talked to another mechanic and they said it may be my turbo. But I did not see any oil from tail pipe either.

The turbo is faulty and leaking oil into the exhaust system

  • Anonymous Jan 08, 2009

take the car to a mechanic, explain the problem and he/she will tell you what parts are needed. before you do that check if there is any oil at the end of the exhaust pipe and if so you will need a turbo. this is the only help i can give you as i can't see the vehicle.

If its white smoke you have a blown head gasket.

is it smoking white out of the tailpipe? if so all you can do is replace the head gasket and hope no other damage has occured to harm the car. you will also want to find a way to fix the crack or replace the part that is cracked.

What is making this 08 caliber 2.0L sxt cvt have a High pitched whining sound at idle and driving?

Possible bearing in one of the drive pulleys. I have changed numerous alternators for this noise. Take the belt off and start the car. If the noise goes away you know it will be pulley related and not transmission related. If noise goes away, spin all pulleys by hand to determine the defective/noisy one

I started my 2005 Taurus, heard a high pitched whining sound and saw smoke rising from under the hood. Haven't started it since, and am going to have it towed to a dealership. I'm not a mechanic...

  • Hi, I can help.

  • Sounds to me like the "whining" was a stuck pulley and the smoke was from the serpentine belt smoking. The alternator, AC compressor, Power Steering Pump, Water Pump and the Tentioner are all pulleys that are driven by the serpentine belt. When one of the em pulleys lock up the belt is still pulled by all the other pulleys and smokes out on the stuck pulley.

  • This video here will give you the best visual on how to remove your serpentine belt (simple really)

  • Once you remove the serpentine belt start turning pulleys. They should spin free with no hangups. If the belt smoked then one of the pulleys is probably really stuck and won't move at all. When you find the stuck pulley that part will need to be replaced as a whole. In other words if your alternator pulley locked up then the alternator will need replaced.

  • This would be the first thing I would look at, given what you explained as to what happened.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

You can go to an auto dismandler. They should be able to help you out. Or if you want to buy a new one. Check out thunderbolt motors.. or precision engines.

If sound comes from under the dash, it might be an hvac actuator that is having a problem? Sometimes you can put your hand on it and feel the vibration? Sometimes with a relay, you can do the same thing.

Same problem: a high pitch whine after extended driving

Sounds like a dry/failing bearing or power steering pump noise. You first need to try to track down where the noise is originating, and the most likely place is at the front of the engine.
I would start by listening with the hood up while parked with the engine running and the noise present, and seeing if it is coming from there. If so, the most likely cause is something connected to the belt - e.g. AC compressor clutch, tensioner, power steering pump, or generator. Can also be caused by the belt just slipping (warn out belt, tensioner not working properly).

High pitch tone from my 2001 chevrolet S-10 pickup

You didnt indicate whether you ran the engine with the belt removed while replacing the alternator,if not do so and verify noise. Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak, best way to diagnose would be with a smoke machine if not available with the engine cold try spraying carb cleaner around the intake & any suspect vacuum hoses with engine idling look for a change in idle speed or elimination of noise. Hope this helps you out

Smoke out of exhaust and loss of power

sounds like your turbo let loose. The smoke is the coolant that runs thru the intercooler which cools the turbo. I would say either remove the turbo from the system , or replace it.
which engine is in your car?
w/o B234R eng; (T25 turbo) [rare]
or
w/B234R eng (TD04 turbo) Garrett type? (tag72623 Garrett pt# 452083-15)

for a used Turbo you are looking at around $150 plus shipping. but you will need to know which turbo you have of course.

The intercooler is gonna run an additional $50 or so (Hollander part number 317-51291) plus shipping.

give me a zip and tell me which engine (or turbo) you have and I will be happy to get you hooked up with the salvage yard closest to you that has these parts.

Heavy feul use and black smoke

It could be a lot of things, but (in general, not specific to this car) it sounds like a 'turbo' problem/turbo air leak. Can you also hear a high pitched whining sound, or something sounding like an high pressured air escaping? Check under the hood for hoses that may have worn through or become disconnected because of busted O-clamps.
