Engine sounds loud on cold start

On cold start of my 2004 Ford Focus LX, the engine sounds louder than normal. After running the engine for a while and than if I start it up again before it cools, it sounds OK.

This just started a month or two ago and I had the car for almost 5 years. I had not heard it before.

It is normal for an engine to run at much higher RPM's when they are cold and that will make it sound louder.

  • Hayward Cowan Jan 07, 2009

If it sounds louder when it's cold than when it's hot I can't think of any thing else that would cause it,

although I still suspect that is what your hearing because I'm not listening to it I can not say for sure.

Vehicles do tend to gradually get nosier as the age and not being aware of a gradual change is not unusual. Howevver if feel that is not the case the best thing would be to take to someone who can hear it run, so if there is a problem it can be corrected.

Check all braces under your car. Not just visually, put hands on each and every brace. Sounds like one might be loose or broken. Hope it's as easy a fix as mine was.

2004 Ford Focus LX, was sputtering while driving

A flashing light is BAD. Its damaging the cat converter. I would check or replace the spark plug wires ( if all OK, then) replace the coil pack. I would not replace anything unless they test bad. but these car are known for bad coil packs.

Engine runs loud at certain speeds

It sounds like someone has been rough on the car. Your transmission may almost be shot, or you need a flywheel repair kit. If you get a flywheel repair kit, you can save your transmission. A flywheel repair kit is cheap. But a transmission aint cheap at all.

Loud noise frm engine area of 2002 Ford Focus

We can not give you any kind of reasonable diagnosis without alot more information. Give us a some adjectives; banging, tapping, etc. Better yet, go to the auto parts store and get a machanics stethoscope. Put the metal rod of the scope on various locations on the engine, and tell us where the noise comes from. Since you say it is a loud noise, concentrate on the lower part of the motor. I am thinking a connecting rod.
