On cold start of my 2004 Ford Focus LX, the engine sounds louder than normal. After running the engine for a while and than if I start it up again before it cools, it sounds OK.
It is normal for an engine to run at much higher RPM's when they are cold and that will make it sound louder.
If it sounds louder when it's cold than when it's hot I can't think of any thing else that would cause it,
although I still suspect that is what your hearing because I'm not listening to it I can not say for sure.
Vehicles do tend to gradually get nosier as the age and not being aware of a gradual change is not unusual. Howevver if feel that is not the case the best thing would be to take to someone who can hear it run, so if there is a problem it can be corrected.

This just started a month or two ago and I had the car for almost 5 years. I had not heard it before.
