89 dodge truck d100 318 v8 , runs great in park and neutral, put it in gear and give it the gas and it misses backfires and stalls out, floor it and it will run great till you ease off and it starts to miss, backfire and stalls. got any ideas?
Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Try this. Remove the air filter housing and start your truck. Place your hand over the intake. If it surges the engine you have a leak, it the engine dies then you have a fuel issue. If you do have a leak its simple enough to find. Have someone sit in the truck and apply the brake with the vehicle in gear. Take a pair of pliers and pinch off one vacuum line at a time. Have your assistant gently apply the gas as you get to each line. When the engine stops stalling you've found your culprit. Note: If it's not a vacuum leak it could be a fuel return line issue. There was a recall on the return lines for the 88-91 model Dodge pickups. If the return line is blocked the engine will not run. I hope this solves your problem.
