Land rover gas tank won't fill,

For the last couple of months I have not been able to fill the gas tank. My routine now is to go to the gas station when the gas is at 1/4 tank, start the pump and get at most 2 gallons before the pump clicks off. I wait at least a minute then pump again, getting anywhere from .2 to .4 gallons, then pump handle clicks off again. I literally am at the gas station for about a half hour to get 8 to 10 gallons of gas. If I try to force it by constantly squeezing the handle after it clicks off, the gas comes spilling back out. ***I have noticed that if I go straight to the gas station first thing before the engine heats up, I can get 5 or more gallons on the first try. Don't know if that is a coincidence.

SOUNDS TO ME LIKE FUEL PUMP AT GAS STATION IS FLOWING FAST AND FUEL ISANT GETTING INTO THE TANK FAST ENOUGH SO THE PUMP SHUTS OFF TO PREVENT SPILLAGE

  • Anonymous Aug 13, 2012

Thanks for the answer. That may be it but I have tried gas stations all over town. I also press the handle as lightly as possible to keep the flow slow. But after only a few seconds of pumping I can hear the gas gurgling in the tank and then the pump handle clicks off.

I just expiriance the same problems on my rover so i check it out and found that the engine spark fuse was out. I replaced the said fuse and their you go it started. You can find that fuse under the dashboard in the satellite 1 fuse box. it should be the 3rd one from the right. Good luck buddy hope that helps you out.

Clear the codes per factory specs, you must drive the car for at least a week normal driving in order for the computer to reset itself to have all sensors in ready mode to be scanned for emissions testing or it will fail emissions due to the computer sensors showing NOT READY MODE, which the mechanic may not tell you about in order to sell you services you don't need.

Land Rover TD5 Discovery II. Why doesn't sound of fuel pump shut off once the vehicle has started and been running for a while?

The pump is getting old. Try putting a couple of shot glasses of 2 stroke engine oil with a full tank of gas station and see if that quiets it down.

based on these two codes it sounds like you have crap in your gas tank, especially water. Get two bottles of dry gas WITH fuelnjector cleaner. Add both bottles at the same time then fill the tank with PREMIUM ( not regular ) gas. MAKE SURE it is a good quality gas at a SUNOCO, MOBIL, etc station; not elcheapo.

If this doesn\'t clear it take it to a dealer.

I changed the battery in my 1999 Land Rover Range Rover. It does not start, but

There's a good chance the car's battery is simply flat. You will have to recharge it

2003 Range rover won't start

Very likely the fuel pump has failed, if you mean you tapped on the gas tank
and it finally started. When a pump fails, sometimes rapping on the tank will re-energize it briefly or maybe even a couple of times before it gives out for good.
If you were tapping on the gas pedal, though, and it just started, your mechanic will have to look at it. Too many electrical fault possibilities, Scott, it needs proper diagnosis to find the p[roblem.

On my 911 C2 I have trouble putting gas in while filling up, the pump keeps shutting off, no matter what I do. So frustrating.

I had this same problem with my Land Rover Discovery. The gas pump shuts off when gas covers a small tube in the tip of the pump handle which triggers the shut off mechanism. If the gas is extra foamy one day it can trigger this mechanism. With my Land Rover, there was a bend in the filler hose just past where the tube would sit when I was filling it up with gas. This would cause some splashing near the tip of the pump handle shutting off the pump. I was able to pull the pump tip out a little bit so that it wasn't inserted all the way into the filler, that way it wasn't as close to the bend in the hose and the splashing didn't affect the shut off mechanism. When I did this I could walk away and let the pump fill the tank all the way. This could be the same problem you're having. Try pulling the handle out a little bit and see if that helps.

Good Luck!

Im working on a 2000 land rover discovery w/4.0 engine had blown head gasket , had heads surfaced and presure tested ,and still getting water in the oil?? is there a cooler or some thing ,i should be...

Did you bleed the cooling system - that's usually why level drops at "Fill tank". It's not an overflow reservoir, coolant actually circulates through the tank. I would pressure test the cooling system, maybe intake is leaking or there's a crack in block. (Note: these motors are sleeved and have been known to have sleeves drop) - here for your ref: download this service manual - "RAVE" (Rover Bible) http://www.landroverresource.com/
