I know how to manually close it with the tool in the fuse box, but I am wondering if there could be a simple fix. The top comes all the way out, and the trunk storage lid closes, it does everything except latch on top of the windshield. It will go back down into the trunk with no problem. Can I reset something?

Just close BOTH the front and back MANUALLY and make sure its in the locked position. (follow the owners manual on how to close it manually). The warning light will go off and the switch will become operational again.
Cheers!

I have had this problem with my 2005 S4 Cab - sometimes the top will not latch. I have found that this was because the fabric near the rear passenger window was not folding into place over the steel structure. I just back up the top and made sure the fabric unfolded and all was well.

The liner is held on by little plastic studs. It can be gently pried off Then you will have access to the lock. The lock should have a nut on it that holds it to the trunk. Turn nut counter-clockwise to remove.

the struts would have no effect on the catch at all. chances are the floor catch has moved inwards a little, re adjust to fit correctly/watertight.

Just took my 2004 A4 convertible (25,000 miles) to the dealer...needed new module...cost $375 for part and $300 for labor. Maybe this should be a recall item.
