Previous owner broke the "child lock" control knob on the rear left door panel, by spinning it all the way around. Now when you pull the door handle the door won't open. I would like to remove the door panel properly to hopefully fix everything. All the videos on you tube show front door panel removals.

I have the same problem on a Toyota Tercel 1997. I am trying to remove the door panel with the door closed (I can not open the door because the door knob is stuck in the lock position). I think I will have to cut through the panel. Have you found something ? My e-mail is [email protected]

It has nothing to do with the "child lock" It is a know problem in this car, they tend to get caught in lock. Only thing to do, is to take of the panel then the outside handle, and through that hole destroy the plastic covering the lock, a large screwdriver and hammer will do! Then you can release the lock, while you pull the inside release handle. Buy new!

remove phillips scew and the door handle. remove padded arm rest on the door by lifting it up, and remove 2 screws. You can use a panel tool to remove the plastic toggle like pins holding the panel border in. Be as gentle as possible they may break due to becoming brittle.

SOURCE: 97 Passat left front door won't open from outside
The outside door handles on 95-97 Passats have a known problem. As they age, the pivot pin for the actuaring lever slides out of one of the support posts. This changes the geometry of the lever system so pulling on the handle does not open the door. The locking mechanism will work fine as will the interior door handle. The only cure is to replace the outside door handle.I have to replace my 95 Passat's Left front door handle about every 2 years due to this problem. Do not replace with a used handle as the problem will reoccur sooner. Replacement is easy; Remove the inner panel, carefully peel back the vapor barrior from the door by the outside door handle. Unplug the wire to the door hande and remove the Phillips head screw on the edge of the door that attaches the handle to the door. Slide the door handle toward the front of the door and gently pull it off. Reverse the process to replace it. Ensure the door handle wires are not pinched by the window mechanism and replace the inner door panel.
Remove the inner door panle by removing the door lock knob along with the screws around the front and back edge of the door panel. Remove the plasic cover on the armrest/door pull and carefully remove the wires from the outside mirror adjustment switch. Remove the 2 screws from under the armrest/door pull and pull the top of panel away from the door. Once the top of the panel is about 8 inches from the door it will lift out of the clips on the bottm of the door. Revese process to reinstall. Carefully glue the plastic vapor barrior in place before you replace the door panel.
