That box holds fuses and relays. The clicking comes from the relays both when each relay is activated and deactivated. This is perfectly normal. Turn one of your turn signals on. Notice that the clicking sound coincides with the turn signal lights flashing.

The engine number is usually stamped directly to a raised machined flat surface on the right hand side of the engine block (standing at the front of the car and facing the engine) but you can be sure it will be in the worst place to try and read it.
