Instrument panel
On this series of full size trucks from 99-2006 (also known as GMT800, where the suburban is the GMT830), the lower left gage is for the Transmission Temperature on 2500 series vehicles. On the The North Face Edition of the 2002 Avalanche, I released the white faced cluster, and the team decided to place the The North Face logo there for decoration.
Charging system failure
Most probably the alternator brushes are worn.
My second guess would be either the alternator's voltage regulator or bridge.
Although the computer said "charging system failure", you were able to drive the car, but all the electrical systems (headlights/taillights, power control unit, injectors, ignition etc) were powered by the battery current instead of the alternator current. The alternator wasn't able to recharge the battery and power the devices due to its failure.
After a couple miles you've discharged the battery to a point where its voltage was insufficient to power the instrument cluster (thus the speedo and fuel meter went down to zero). The engine's computer, injection, ignition and, let's call it "airbag controller", are far more critical for the passengers' and vehicle's safety and therefore were still able to work despite the battery voltage being so low. But some time later the battery was discharged to the point it was unable to power these most critical devices and the engine stopped.
2004 Chevy Express 1500 keeps blowing trailer
If you're only blowing the fuse while the trailer is plugged in, the problem is in the trailer/wiring. This takes into account that the truck has a factory installed 7 way receptacle. If that's not the case, the problem can be in the incorrectly wired truck and the trailer is ok. On the truck, looking into the 7 way receptacle should be as follows.Top left=Tail LightsTop right=12v steady source/charge lineLeft middle=Left turn/brakeRight middle=Right turn/brakeLeft bottom=groundRight bottom=brake controller outputCenter=reverse lights if your trailer is equipped. Your trailer plug should mirror this. This is the standard.
