I would guess a broken drive belt. Just take top off and check. Two screws on back, pull top back about 2 inches, left off. Belt should be around drum. If belt is loose or gone, it's broken.

Most likely lint is being burned in the heating element chamber and the resulting ash is being blown onto ur clothes. Fix is to take dryer apart(top off, control panel off, front off) and vacuum out inside of dryer. Be careful around heating element. Blow out heating element chamber.

Most dryers don't have a back panel. All one piece of the body.

if it has tripped breaker wen first installed the breaker may be small, if after in use it does it have electrician look at wiring, beaker and receptacle. if unit is exceeding the design amperage then call for service.

Take top off and check to see if belt is broken. Broken belt trips a motor switch.

What model number? Is the airflow out of the vent strong? Is the airflow warm or hot?

Is this a DLG977W or a DLE5977W?

Yes. Remove the four screws from inside the dryer.

Take top off and check for a broken drive belt.

Are you sure the belt is routed correctly? From front of machine, the belt comes down left side of drum, then clockwise around spring loaded idler pulley, then around motor drive and back to right side of drum.

If it's an electric drier the heating elements could be bad. If gas, the valve could be bad.

it will be the heating element chamber, and tunnel, it can get blocked there before it goes out the pipe.

You need to unplug the unit and push the tabs between the front panel and the lid .This will allow the lid to come up and you can unscrew the front panel. There are 2 screws on the top of the front panel and 2 screws on the front behind the door when you open it. This will allow the front to come off. Now you can get access to the heater. There are 2 thermostats on the heater assembly. Check these for continuity with a meter. You need to check and see if the heater has continuity. The heater or one of the thermostats will be bad.
