You should just be able to press the button. Has the machine stopped working with the START light flashing and the time saver light on? If so, this is an error code indicating a motor fault. Please describe any other lights that are on and if they are flashing or solid
The flashing lights are an error code (Which I can't quite figure, but I believe ARE associated with a blocked filter. Is it possible that the slime and mess extended beyond the filter?
Before you go throwing the machine away, Unplug it from the mains (NOT just turn it off) to allow the machine to reset and while it's unplugged, stuff your garden hose up the waste water pipe and turn it on full blast to blow any remaining debris out of the way. (Wrap a towel over the end of the pipe to soak up the spliiage as one will not fit neatly into the other).

This is typical of a control board problem.
About 60% of the time they can be repaired, but it's easier to replace it than keep testing.
If you are competent at electrical repairs, then read -on, otherwise order a replacement, and have it fitted.
Isolate supply.
Remove top cover by removing screws at top rear, slide cover rearwards.
Control board is on right at the front.
Test connections - remove and replace all connections, checking for signs of arcing.
Check main wiring loom to motor for integrity and damage.
If no signs of damage, remove control unit board, and examine for arcing or poor contacts, overheated components or damage.
If everything still looks ok, a replacement control board should be fitted and the machine tested.
