My Coleman 5000 generator in storage. Gas tank was drained. New gas put in. Won't start. Gas poured down spark plug hole. l Engine will start but stops and won't start again. Is it a carburetor problem? Fuel gets to the carburetor, but doesn't seem to get to the engine. Any ideas?

It sounds like your carb needs to be taken apart and cleaned out. The gasoline in the carb sounds like it has varnished and blocked the passages in the carb. I would try some carb cleaner, if you are comfortable in taking apart the carb, you can use the spray cleaner to open the passages. You might have to soak the carb a bit as well.

Generator Won't start

Gap the plug at .030 What is most likely the main problem is whatever gas sat in the carb. Even with fresh gas there will be some old gas still in the float bowl. You may be able to drain the bowl and be OK but I have a feeling that the carb will need to come off and be disassembled and cleaned properly. You can try spraying carb cleaner (I dislike starting fluid as it is too volatile and carb cleaner does just as well in this instance) into the carb/intake. Remove the air filter, open the choke, and spray the carb cleaner in through that way if possible. You can actually keep an engine running by spraying with short bursts. Even by just spraying once you should be able to get the engine to start. If it does start but then will not stay running without spraying more into the engine then it is a carb problem.

Colman promate 5000 won't start, wher is teh fuel shut off valve?

on the bottom of the tank were the fuel line goes to the tank, it may be a round knob u turn, I have problems starting mine after setting a while so I choke it and pull the cord, if it has set for a long time, you may need to pull the spark plug and put a drop or 2 of gas in the cyilinder, reinstall the plug andwire and it should start.

How do you change the spark plug on a Coleman Powermate 5000 10P Generator? It has been sitting for about eight years since last use and won't start. Would like to change the spark plug, but it seems...

The plug is under the gas tank. They can be difficult to get to and you may have to remove/loosen the tank. If you can remove the spark plug wire you could test for spark. If you have a spark and it still doesn't crank the spark plug is probably the least of your worries unless you drained the tank and the carb (most people don't.)
If you have a spark give a spritz of starter fluid into the carb after removing the air filter and see if it runs for even a bit. If it does fire and doesn't run, clean the carb.
Good luck.

My powermate 5000 with subaru engine will run anywhere from 30-60 minutes and shut down. One light pull to the pull start and it runs great for another 30-60 minutes. Never a problem to start it back up...

There is debri or dirt in gas tank and eventually it gets sucked up and clogs the screen filter on the end of gas line. Drain gas tank and flush out a few times. let dry and put new gas in it. check your gas can, if it is metal, it may have rust in the bottom of it and it goes in the gas tank and clogs screen, make sure you have a clean gas can that you use to fill the generator.

I cant get my coleman powermate 5000 MAXA ER to start. i have changed the oil, refilled the gas, changed the spark plug, and tried using starter fluid. what else can i try?

It's almost certainly gummed up gas in the carburetor. Get some carb cleaner, and some spray instant start. Drain the gas from the tank and put a small amount of 50/50 carb cleaner and gas in the tank. Remove the air cleaner, open the choke, spray a little instant start into the carb and start it. It may fire just a couple of time. Keep the choke on to try to pull a bit of gas through the carb. You may have to do this a few times. Once you can tell some gas is flowing, open the choke slowly to keep it running until you use up the 50/50 mix. Then try a small amount of straight gas in the tank to be sure it works right, before you refill the tank. Make sure you use a stabilizing additive in any gas that you store for more than a month. good luck, Al K

Sounds like you need to clean the carb ports, lines, jets, etc... purchase a carb spray cleaner with a tube to place on the spray head (Berryman's Chemtool B-12 is awesome). We have a Coleman Powermate 5000 generator that won't start

It is really common for generators and things that are not used really often to have the fuel turn to varnish in the gas tank, and carburetor. If it smells like really old fuel, you may be in for a tough time, but before you give up, pour out all the old fuel, and replace it with clean fuel. Then try to choke the engine as you normally would. If it does NOT start and run normally, take the spark plug out, and dip it into the gas tank and quickly put it into the engine, and re-attach the wire and give it a pull. It should hit a few times if you have good electrical fire to the plug. If it starts, kill the engine, and tighten the plug. If it does not start after trying this a couple of times, the carburetor will meed cleaning of the old varnish and jells.
