The antenna for the radio is the headphones wire. The twisted copper wire can act not only transporting the sound to the headphones, but receiving the signal for the radio. The two applications work in different frequencies, the radio works on Megahertz and the sound in Kilohertz.
You will have to revise the soldering of the 3.5 mm jack, because it's probably that the contacts are bad. They could work for sending the sound to the headphones, because the power of the signal is very strong. However, the power of the radio signal is very weak, and the contacts must be very good to get a good signal.

I plugged in headphones to sherwood reciver rd6506 and only one side works then plugged them into computer and both sides work, both speakers works when head phones are not plugged in

The head phone jack in the Sherwood receiver has dirty contacts. If the head phones work in another device, that proves there is nothing wrong with them. When phones are plugged in the Sherwood, shows s problem with the receiver. When the head phones are not plugged in and both external speakers come on, it means nothing regarding head phones. Contact cleaner could be used to fix the problem.

How to repair the head phone jack of laptop d510

hashmi903,
To fix the head phone jack on a system you would need to replace the sound card or the motherboard where the headphone jack is soldered onto the board. You could send it back to Dell for repairs or contact your local computer repair shop for repairs.

the jack inside the unit either is bad or the solder connections are bad...you can re-solder the jack(if you know how to solder) and see if this fixes it...or else you'll have to replace the jack(which may be avail. through Radio Shack)

Only one earphone works, weird problem

there is a broken solder joint where it is on the pc board.it is not the earbud itself, because when you pull it out, both sides work.the jack has 3 sections, the tip which is one side, the next piece, which is the other side, and the shank piece which is the ground.the ground connects to the outside ring of the headphone jack.there are 2 contact points inside for the two channels.what happens is the copper foil of the pc board fractures where the pins are soldered.scrape away some of the foil so that copper is exposed for the pins, and resolder it and it will work if you wiggle the jack, you will see the whole piece of circuit board move where it is cracked.after fixing it,put epoxy over the area to make it stronger.

Ground wire was hooked up to a power wire...

My guess is it blew the power supply. Best bet would be to have a repair shop have a look.
