I havent used Canon 2580C and hence cant comment on Scan Panel. But you can download SU5000 or Captureperfect 2.0 from Canon website (http://software.canon-europe.com/). This is easy to use and probably offers more features as compared to ScanPanel. Canon 5010C is a higher model as compared to 2589C and Captureperfect may offer better user interface.

You can go to your program files on Drive C: when you explore your computer, look for the icon for scanner on Canon folder and right click on it, you can either copy and drag it on your desktop or right click and create a shortcut.

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by
