I'LL TELL YOU UPFRONT i HAVE ONLY INSTALLED SATA ON A NEW SYSTEM SO MY ANSWER MAY NOT BE CORRECT IN ALL SITUATIONS
Question is vague. Are you replacing a drive or building a new system? SATA drives have a dedicated plug on the Mother Board. Of course you already know you can't replace an IDE with a SATA without an adapter (Ebay has them for about $8) or the Bios is incompatible. The power is on the Motherboard and does not have a connector from the power supply like an IDE has.

A SATA hard drive does not have a Molex power connector.
The power connector for the SATA drive looks like this:
how do i install a wdeads hard drive? where is - mst64.jpg
The power connector plugs into the back of the SATA drive just like the Molex connector pluged into the back of the old IDE or PATA drives.

The second cable in the picture above is thow do i install a wdeads hard drive? where is - mst64_1.jpga cable. Here is a complete picture:
mst64_1.jpg
One end plugs into the drive and the other end plugs into the motherboard, into one of the SATA connectors. The SATA connectors are numbered, much as the old IDE connectors were numbered, but with SATA it does not matter which one you plug the boot drive into. how do i install a wdeads hard drive? where is - mst64_2.jpgll the computer in BIOS where the boot drive is. However, I still plug mine into SATA 1.

The SATA hard drive has different data and power connectors to the IDE hard drives.
If your computer already has a SATA controller and you have a SATA data cable then you need a SATA power cable.
You need to purchase a 4pin power connector to SATA power adapter. These are available from the shop where you purchased the SATA hard drive.

How 2 install a triple format sata internal drive in a gateway desk top

check for a open sata port on your computer. if there is one connect the hard drive with a SATA cable to the sata port on the motherboard.
connect the sata power to the hard drive or a molex to the hard drive if you do not have one. do not connect sata and molex to the hard drive together. if you don't have a molex connect you will need a molex to sata power adapter.
after connecting the hard drive to your pc. turn it on. in windows xp it will auto detect the hard drive and may prompt you to format the hard drive.

I am having several sata hdd what i noticed is the third connector on the drive 1data 2 power and3?

most SATA hard drives have both the molex and SATA power connectors to work with every PSU (power supply unit). There's a good chance that your third connector is the Molex one, don't worry about it.

I am installing a new power supply. Need wiring diagram to make sure all components are hooked up properly.

Basically each connector is made so that it can only go where it should go unless you do some modification or really force the connector in.

All in all you should have one 24pin brick of wires. This is made up of 20pin block plus 4pin block.
If your computer mainboad requires 24pins of power then take the 20pin block and add the 4pin block to it. If not then just use the 20pin block.

Then there is the 4pin CPU power brick. Can only go in one way.
This 4 pin block is not to be confused with the other 4pin block found on the 24pin brick.

Lastly there are 4pin Molex, SATA and stiffy connectors, they can also only go in one way.

If it all fits in then you should be alright.

CPU: 4pin
Mainboard: 20+4pin
Hard drives: Molex or SATA power

I have a Dell Dimension E520 running Windows XP. I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 100 gb Ultra ATA hard drive (model number ST3100011A) with IDE connections (taken from an old Emachines). The plan was...

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive
Test the leads that attach to your ((hard drive from the motherboard)) or replace all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your ((motherboard to hard drive))
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this helps

Can i install 1 tb hard drive

Your board has (4) Serial ATA (SATA) connectors so you can install an SATA hard drive of any size you want. Make sure you are running at least Windows XP SP 3 because earlier versions had trouble recognizing large hard drives. Also make sure your power supply has connectors for SATA drives. If not you can find 4 pin MOLEX to 15 pin SATA power converter cables on Tigerdirect.com

Hook up fro WD3200 SATA hard drive. I am trying a new power supply and I dont remember how the harddrive was connected ,DoH Do I need both the SATA and the 4 pin molex connectors connected ?

Hi,
You cannot use a molex connector on a SATA hard drive. You need to connect one of the black plugs from your power supply and the SATA (red) cable from *********** board.

Best wishes,

Trying to install a missing fan but cant find the power pin

These are relatively simple to find.
Although there are some complications when locating them, for the most part, they're in no way difficult to locate, the problem YOU may be having though, is that you just don't have a pin output for another fan.
IF that is the case, simply go to your nearest computer hardware store, and purchase a 3pin ATX fan to 4pin Molex Connector Cable.

they look like this:
[img]http://i.s.shopwiki.com/i/data/140x140/4/735/332/aHR0cDovL2VwLnlpbWcuY29tL2lwL0kveWhzdC0xNTYyMzEyMTk4NjM5NV8yMDUzXzEzOTY5NTEz==.jpg/img]

that will allow you to change the fans connector to something you can use. Simply remove the female molex on your hard drive if you don't have a free male, and mate them, then rehook the new empty one to the hard drive, and the fan to the other.
**note** this DOES take power from your PSU (power supply unit) so make sure that you have something of a good wattage, since this will take a 12 volt discharge to be kept.

Gateway 831GM Eratic Fan Noise

Hi,

This can be caused by several things:

1. Bad temp sensor
2. Bad voltage, but that will usually cause the whole system to restart
3. Too low maximum temp setting inside the chassis(setting is in bios), often denote as max case temp.

One way to bypass the problem is rig the fan to a molex adapter with a variable voltage molex to 2/3/4pin fan connector and adjust the speed to the maximum quiet setting.

The 831's did run a bit warm so if the case temp setting is set to low it will fluxuate quite a bit. Try adjusting the max case temp up around 50c just to see if that does it, if it does either use the variable voltage dial solution or add a second case fan that's always on, prefferably a low RPM running direct off molex so it will reduce the average temp and therby the need of the monitored case fan to rev up.
