Thank you Jeff S. for your solution of releasing my ext hard drive by merely changing the drive letter assigned to it - simple solution that did the trick immediately like you said. I am so appreciative. I have been looking for 3 days to find the proper solution - tried others that did not work - yours was great. Thank you so much!

most SATA hard drives have both the molex and SATA power connectors to work with every PSU (power supply unit). There's a good chance that your third connector is the Molex one, don't worry about it.

1. This issue will require you to disassemble the device. Which I do not recommend, and you will need some soldering and skills.
2. A qualified tech can repair this or if the drive is under warranty you may be able to return it to the manufacturer for repair for a fee.

USB connector broke off

Hello,
You can surely do that but since there will be no Operating System to boot from, you will need a bootable third party software that can give you an environment where you can view your hard disk and copy things from it. An example is Hiren Boot CD's mini XP and Winternal's ERD Commander. You then set your PC to boot from CD in the bios setup.

All the best.

Do the following to see if the hard drive is recognized.

Left Click on control panel
Left Click on administrative tools
Left Click on Computer Management
scroll down the screen until you find disk management
left click on disk management.

see if you device is listed in the disk management window.

If so then, right click on the disk you indicated and select properties.

make sure the disk is active and that windows is reading the basic information.

IF your computer does not recognize the hard disk, you may want to disconnect it and reboot your computer.

then reconnect it, and restart once again.

this allows your bios and operating system the chance to "discover" your hardware again.

I ;have formatted the WD external drive and

You should not even try to install an operating system on an external drive. Windows looks at the "C" drive and installs programs to "C" drive. You are trying to put it on the "G" drive. You will have too many problems and wish you never had tried. Buy a larger main drive and partition it with two equal partitions. Then "Dual Boot". You will find how to do this on the internet. Just Google "Dual Booting".

Cannot format my WD 1TB external hard drive

The hard disk is having bad sectors on its first 3000 sectors.the bad sectors are caused by degradation of the platter of the hard disk.OR the factory area of the hard disk has certain files called SMART, G -LIST and other log files.Unless one empties those log files with a good tool , one cant format ones hard disk.

Not detecting, beeping

This is likely a couple problems; 1. The hard drive is dying or is dead. You're looking at hardware recovery if this is the case. There are some tools such as Spinrite that might be able to recover the disk. (GRCHard drive data recovery software) 2. The power supply on the computer/laptop is not functioning as well as it used to. Try using another PC to see if there's any difference in results.
