I can't seem to get the machine to make a button hole. I'm using the sliding button hole foot, and it sews one side down then when I switch my stitch selector from 1, to 4__2, the needle goes up and down in the same spot, then i tried from there to change the stitch selector to 3 and the line continues up the first line I've just sewed. I think that the 4__2 stitch is supposed to make a horizontal line, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to move the fabric, it seems as though it won't let me so I didn't want to force it, am I missing something, or is my machine broken?
Thank you for your advice, I tried to watch the mechanism my self and I think because I moved it so many time, it loosened whatever was making it stick. So I'm happy to report that the machine's button hole selection works now. i have the same problem. I haven't used it in months but the last time I did, it made buttonholes without a problem. I tried doing all the steps over again multile times, turning the stitch type multiple times thinking maybe it was off a little etc...but it just stitches in the same place..no moving at all. What ever you do DON'T FORCE IT. I see these problems when a buttonhole mechanism hasn't been used for a long time or the machine has been dropped. There is a cam follower (like a finger) that changes positions when you turn the knob. This could be out of place and a tech will have to go in and fix it.
OR old oil has hardend from non-use or grime has acumulated in the mechanism and jamming it up. I sometimes have luck cleaning it with Tri-Flow oil (hardware stores) but again this may be a tech job also.

sure, put on the buttonhole foot after
putting a button into it and using the screw knob to set the length you want.
Turn stitch length knob and stitch width
knobs to zero, (always set them to zero first to avoid wear on the stitch
selection mechanisim) then turn the left stitch selector knob to the blue
button hole symbol. Now turn middle knob stitch width, to the blue
buttonhole symbol. Now turn right knob stitch length to blue 1, sew down
the first side of your buttonhole until foot slide in the buttonhole foot
reaches end stop. raise needle and turn stitch length to blue 2, and sew
three bar tacks across buttonhole. Again, raise needle and then turn stitch
length to blue 3 and sew back down otherside of buttonhole until you reach the
end stop. Needle up, turn length know to blue 4 and sew three bartacks to
end. there is a last blue symbol dot on stitch length knob, this will sew
a stitch in place to tie off the ends. Raise pressure foot, remove your
work and draw top threads to underside with a needle, and tie off or use a dot
of fray stop. Done! if you don't have a manual you could email me and

Assuming its a singer domestic machine 1.For a 1 step buttonhole, you will need to place and lock the actual button at the buttonhole foot holder(back end of the foot), the size will remain the same each time you sew a button hole. 2.For a 4 step buttonhole, the size is determine by sliding the foot against the line/marker which you can see on the foot itself each time you start to sew the button hole.
attach the sliding foot by clipping off the current one, placing the sliding food onto the needle plate, lining up the clip with the attchment point and lowering the pressure foot down onto it so it clicks in.
Now, does your machine have a little lever device to the left and just behind the pressure foot, have a look for it. If yes, then pull it down, this is the buttonholing trigger and it connects with the sliding foot to trigger the reverse and stitching of the second side.
Program the machine for button holing, this might be pushing in a numbered code, on my 6500 there are five buttonholes and they each have a code that I enter.
Place your fabric test sample under the pressure foot and put the button into the back of the pressure foot, there is a little ratchet device that closes up holding the button firmly to get the right dimensions.
I always do at least 2 test buttonholes using same fabric, usually 2 layers with interfacing between.
Start the buttonholing sequence by pressing on your machines foot control, it should sew backwards away from you down the first side of the buttonhole, and the trigger should connect with a bit on the slide foot triggering the machine to stop, sew the bar tack, and then reverse and sew the otherside and final bar tack.
That's how it goes on my 6500, I hope this applies to your MC10000 too, it should be very similar. Your machine probably has at least 3 or 4 different types of buttonholes it can do. If you don't have a manual for it, it probably is worth sources one as these machines have lots of features to use.
On my machines, the one step button hole requires a pull down sensor that the button hole foot triggers when it has done one side. You put the button in the holder part of the button hole foot, set up with sensor and start to sew, being careful not to touch the trigger, then the machine will sew the required length, change stitch and then do other side. Maybe there's a demo on you tube ? I hope this helps
that presser foot with that black thing that is just flopping around... well when the presser foot is down that thing should be locked into the side hole. when you have the presser foot up, put it into the side hole, fiddle with it, move it around til you find that hole, then drop the presser foot it should be locked on it now. That T presser foot needs that.
It sounds as though you are using the Memory button hole setting which sews the BH forward on one side(leg of the button hole ) and backward on the other side. You have button holes on Numbers 11-16. I think #16 is the one you are trying to use but the others are easier. Put the button in the special foot, pull the BH lever down( It is located on the left side of the machine towards the rear of the machine ).Select #11 and the machine should sew both legs in the same direction. This machine has always made great button holes. sewman7
Make sure you have pull down the arm that will engage the button hole mechaizm. Put a button in the back of you button hole foot, attach foot, reach up on the left side just below the light and pull the lever down, choose the button hole , lower tension to 3 and sew out the button hole. The button hole foot should push on the arm when it gets to the end and complete the rest of the button hole. If the columns do not match then it has to be serviced by a husqvarna dealer.

When doing the button hole....after installing the button hole foot and lowering the foot....and adding the button so the automatic button hole size is determined...you lower the button hole lever it will touch the back of the button hole foot. this holds the button hole foot in the proper position...if this lever is not all the way down...the machine blips at you...check to see that it is down all the way...I hope this helps you..It truly does all that it advertises and is a great machine...BBill01
P.S. you can adjust width and length of the stich also...see instruction manual. pg 28-30
