If you pull it apart make sure the roller and the belt is free of debris. And I would check the belt to see if it broken or real loose. If so contact Shark and see if they will send a replacement . (It may cost a few bucks) At least this is a first start hopefully it helps?

It may have something caught in the roller mechanism if not the belt that drives the roller may have broken or slipped off. If the problem is neither of these then the motor that drives the belt to drive the roller may have failed, Please take to an authorized service centre and have it repaired or replaced if it does not cost more than a new vacuum if it is going to cost more than a new vacuum then discard that machine and purchase a new one. you need to change belt on brush and also check for locked up bearings on brush roller and or debris lodged between brush and guard dislodge if need be or replace bearings on brush roller if they are bad

1) you need a little tight the belt, with the bolts of motor.
2) you must shure if the belt if NOT large or short( in both cases the rollers will NOT run. can be slip. or too TIGHT. and BRAKE the motor.
3) the motor you must test for brush, switch, or open winding.
4) put a little lube in the extreme of shaft rollers,see by turning at hand if they run of course unplugged the power cord.

Easy to fix. The burning rubber smell is hair in the roller against the belt! Congrats, you have a healthy vacuum, you are lucky! Unplug the vacuum, remove the screws that cover the belt and roller brush. If you are nervous, take pictures with a cell phone or digital camera as you go for re-assembly. ok, pull the long roller out of it's slot and out of the vacuum. cut all hair off the roller and carefully move the belt from side to side to do the same. If the belt slips off, it slips back on easily. If the area is too tight for fingers guide it back on with any long thin wooden object. You can squeeze the belt to narrow it and slide it back over the thin metal rod that spins it from the motor. Slide the roller through the belt and back into it's slots. If it won't slide back on, turn it a quarter turn. Repeat till it does slide back into place. Put the face plate back on-tighten screws, flip it over, plug itr in and it should work!

Remove these obstructions, probably best to do so with a scissor if it's hair or long pieces of carpet fibers. After removing the debris try manually rotating the brush roller to uncover other hidden clogs. Another thing to take note of is the condition of the bristles on the roll itself. Are they lose or worn down? These are signs that your brush roller is in need of replacing.

While checking out your brush roll you might as well take a look at your vacuum's belt. Your belt should be replaced about every three months. After regular usage, the belt will stretch out, lessening the tension on the brush roller. Lesser tension diminishes the brush roller's turn rate and speed. If the belt feels loose then it certainly is affecting your vacuums suction as well as your brush roll not moving at all.

You need to replace the belt. Even though the belt may look fine it can be stretched and therefore it won' t turn the roller brush against the resistance of the carpet. You can get Hoover replacement belts here:
