This a freezing of the system caused by the small memory (Ram memory ) or too many programs running in the same time for the capacity of the Ram ..or the CPU ..or just one faulty program or application ...Freezing the screen can be also a issue of running a program that requires video card resources much larger than available ..You should pay attention on the programs running often when the freezing is happening ..and than search on the internet for minimum requiring resources for running that application ..If the system permits you should upgrade..at least the Ram memory for to avoid this happening ..or use similar application with less needs from the system ..
Another cause can be the system being infected and in this case you should reinstall the operation system ..(this is probably the cause if your system has at least 1G of ram ..and 2G CPU ..cause in this case it is enough to run common application of any kind except complicated video ones..and the cause for freezing is a virus )

Black Box in the lower portion of the screen will not disappear

Check your Closed Captioning settings in the menu. I would bet money you have the "Text" feature enabled. Change it to OFF and you should be all set. I hope this was of some assistance.

Black rectangle on screen

The box you're seeing is the "closed caption' box. You need to use the remote and disable CC mode on it, and the box will go away :)

Vizio 42" LCD - Random appearance of small black rectangles

I would check and see if you have the text option on under your closed captioning. With the new digital transition the signal for text captioning has been getting messed up during broadcast here lately. If it is on i would just shut it off or go to regular closed captioning.

Black insert/rectangle

T he text mode in the closed caption is turned on.
Turn off the closed caption.
I don't have the schematic in front of me, so, I will try from memory.
There may be a button on the remote that says CC, if so then use that button to turn it off, if not then go to the customer menu and you may have to search a bit.
Either way it's an easy fix and you can do it yourself.
I f you can't find it, then, reply and I will give better instructions when I get into my shop next week.
