Refrigerator not getting cold and freezer keeps forming ice near the bottom

Hello,

I was wondering if you can help me. I have a 10 yr old amana refrig. The door gasket was warped for a while so it wouldnt cool b/c cool air was leaking out. I changed it but it still wouldnt cool, don't know if the prolonged period of warped gasket somehow damage certain frig parts b/c by making it overwork to keep cool. Do you have any idea? the two dials work when turned on, just wont get cool. thanks so much for any info.

    Hi mike,

    1. It's not cold like around room temp or cooler than room temp, if you put your hand in it, its not cool like what a refrig should feel. you dont feel much cold air.

    2. I do not have a thermometer with me right now so I have to get back to you on with numbers, but there is no cold air, u can hear the refrig constantly running trying to make it cold though. when its cold, the refrig would stop, but now it just keeps going on , I guess b/c it knows that its still not cold yet.

    3. there is buildup of frost on the back wall of freezer. everytime i remove the frost, it would rebuild again. In the past, when I remove it, it doesnt come back, now it does and I have to keep doing it or the refrig will make a loud noise when the frost completely covers up the back wall vent.

    4. I turned it off in the past to replace the gasket, but it was already not cold before I turned it off due to the warped gasket.

    5. is the compressor a common prob? is it expensive and hard for me to replace myself? how do i test if its bad.

Thank you so much for your time.

need to keep defrosting freezer and fridge works for a day or two until ice build back up and need to defrost. Any suggestions

is it not cold, like room temperature or hotter or is it just not cold enough?

approx temperatures would be great if you have a thermometer.

also check for any buildup of frost in the back wall of the freezer.

has the machine been turned off for a long time? (over 1 day)

the door gasket problem could overwork the compressor causing it to be prematurely weak in pressure.

  • the frost buildup in the freezer will definitely cause the refrigerator to be warm.
  • but if you defrost it completely (overnight with the door open), it should work fine for a day or so after. if it does then it is just a defrost problem.
  • compressors do last a long time but after 10 years it is possible that it is starting to get weak.
  • changing the compressor is a complicated and expensive job.

My freezer is cold makes ice fridge is warm not cold at all

Look for frost on the rear of the freezer, that is a sign of a defrost problem. If the heater or heater thermostat is open then ice will form over the cols and block the flow of air.

Fridge/Freezer both only cool and not cold/freezing

have you checked the rear wall of the freezer?if its frosted over, remove the rear panel to check the evaporator coil,if its iced-up it cannot cool the unit properly,if so de-ice with a hair dryer, then check the defrost heater under the coil that is suppose to keep the coil ice free,if its open it cant heat to defrost,if it has continuity and is good, then check the defrost control be it timed or adaptive for proper operation

Ice forming on the back of side by side 17 yr old fridge

You have a bad defrost heater . To access , you will have to remove the inside rear freezer panel . The heater is located at the bottom of the coils . Take your model number when ordering the part so you get the correct part .

Not blowing cold air

Most likely evaporator coils are iced near solid...few hours unplugged would have helped just a little...needs major defrosting though.
The automatic defrost cycle will never fix it when it gets this bad...if it's still working yet.

I have one of these and have had to use heat gun/ hair dryer more than once to defrost it.

Probably the cause...which will need fixed or it will do it again sooner or latter...is the melted frost/ice goes down a little drain tube and dumps into tray to evaporate above coils...this tube gets plugged first with dust and then when melted frost drains and stands in tube the tube get plugged with frozen water.

You see it is important to unplug or fridge will self destruct.

11 year old amana bottom freezer icemaker drips water when filling tray

Hello dunc444444
Welcome,
You said, Bottom freezer works fine, but upper refrigerator has no cold air

Is your freezer so full that it is packed to the top especially in the rear?
Refrigerators and freezers share the air from the compressor and travel through vents in the rear of the freezer and fridge.
Sometimes it can effect the cooling in the fridge if the freezer articles block the vents!

The water overfilling in the ice maker is an ice maker problem only.
When we install an ice maker there is a short white plastic tube that we push through the rear
hole of the fridge which supply's the water to the maker, the outside water line attaches to this.
That tube we push through the fridge must go in till it stops. And empties in to a little sistran at the rear of the ice maker. Make sure it did not sip out or backwards a little when you may have moved
rolled the fridge out to clean under it!

Also you need periodically to remove the front grill down in front of the fridge and gently run a refrigerator brush under the coils to clean out the dust that may block air flow over the coils.(the coils are metal black tubes that run back and forth along the bottom of your fridge.
The vacuum will not reach in to that tight space. That's why they make a special brush for this chore.
Let me know how you do?

Amana bottom freezer

Hello ghilitho, what you are having is an issue with the defrost cycle. There are 3 parts to this, heater, thermosat, and timer. Sometimes on the newer units the timer is the electronic control. What you are seeing is after you defrost the unit, it works for a time, this is because the evap fan pushes the air thru the unit. With the evap coil froze solid, the cooling drops. You will need a ohm meter to check the heater and thermosat, the heater & thermosat should show to be closed. Also make sure if this unit has a over heat thermosat that it is closed. It may have open up. If all this is good, then the timer is the issue. Hope this helps
