Refurbished Dell Optiplex GX280 with DVD/CD-RW Drive will not recognize blank CDs in order to burn music. I was told by the seller that I had to purchase burn software. (I also had to purchase CinePlayer DVD Decoder from Roxio in order to get the drive to play a DVD, although the seller did not mention it.) I tried to burn a Music CD in Windows Media Player 11. It would not recognize that a blank CD had been inserted. I had Roxio Creator MyDVD Combo LE on the PC I am replacing, so I installed it on the GX280, but Roxio does not recognize blank CDs either. IE8 was getting an add-on error for DLA too, so I uninstalled the Roxio software. I could buy Roxio Burn, but will that solve my problem? Microsoft says it will solve the IE8 compatibility issue, but will Roxio Burn recognize blank CDs on this drive? The drive is identified as DVD/CD-RW Drive (D). The Hardware properties state SAMSUNG CDR-W/DVD SN-324S but the type says DVD/CD-ROM drives. When I troubleshoot, only CD-ROM options are presented. The Recording properties state CD recording is enabled on the drive. Is this really a Combo Drive or am I only allowed to read CDs? What do I have to purchase to record music to a blank CD?

    I tried the suggestions. There were no names in the registry for any filters. I installed Img Burn, inserted a blank CD and it tried to find it but after a few minutes eventually came back with the message "Device Not Ready (Medium Not Present - Tray Closed)". Thank you for your help.

The windows might be corrupted. You could try editing the windows registry. here are the steps:

In order to delete upper and lower filters you're going to have to edit the registry. The usual cautions apply. If the registry is not edited properly your whole system can crash.

1) Close all open programs
2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
* SYSTEM
* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class
* {4D36E965-E325-11CE-
BFC1-08002BE10318}

4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

* UpperFilters
* LowerFilters
* UpperFilters.bak
* LowerFilters.bak

5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor
7) Reboot your computer
8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

last option, you could try installing imgburn. here's the download link: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

If nothing happens, your dvd drive is bad.

Good Luck,

Ryan

Sounds like the lens is dirty. Run a cd cleaner through the drive. That should take care of it.

DELL 0PTIPLEX GX280 DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE CD DRIVE

Sounds like a bad drive. But if it was me I would open the case and check to see if all cables are snug in there place (ofcourse make sure it's unplugged from power). I have seen EIDE's work them self's loose just enough to make a hard drive or CD/DVD not work. Good luck.

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

GOOD LUCK AND DONT FORGET TO RATE MY POST!! :D

DVD-RW drive burns music CDs and DVDs, but not data CDs

Alright. Seems like Windows, for some reason, doesn't think your drive is able to burn things when trying to deal with this kind of disc.

I'll need further information, like if you use another program to burn music CDs, and what other things might have changed the registry settings. I know of a fix that resolves issues with the Windows version of data CD burning, but it only applies to CD-R and CR-RW drives..

LG LS50 DVD/CD-RW DRIVE won't recognize blank dvd-r

Yes does not read DVD-R because if your LS50 Labeled like this (DVD/CD-RW) means that can read only all DVD Disc and cannot write on DVD blank only CD blank.

You can burn only on the blank CD-RW or any blank CD.
