Washer is about 9years old. My wife is very mechanical, and I'm out of town. She tried to remove the top lid to change the damper staps, only the front panel came off. How do you remove the top lid completely??

What is your model number? On most GE washers, once you get the front panel off, there are 2 1/4" screws on the right and left hand sides up near the top. Once you take these off, you can pop out your lid switch (lifting the top completely before doing so can ruin it). Then finnish lifting the lid slide it towards the right and lift it out of the way. 2 5/16" screws on each of your 4 dampning straps and you will have them all out. What is your model number? It took us a while to figure it out, but it's possible if you have an old model stylemaster WSM2420TCAWW, this is how you get to remove the front panel.
1) unscrew the cover between the dryer and the washer 2) there are small bolt-like screws behind the washer lid, use a wrench to unscrew them 3) now you can just slide the washer lid towards you, and it will come off
Your lid switch may be bad. These fail mechanically and electrically. To get to the lid switch first remove the front panel so that you can get the top loose it is bolted down. Use a putty knife and do downward force to release the front panel spring clips.Remove the top and you will see the lid switch quick connect. Unplug that and sit the top down on a work bench or table. Check the switch for mechanical and electrical failure. Set your meter to ohms and close the lid. You should have continuity. 1. Disconnect the electrical cord from the wall. 2. Move the washer forward about 12 inches. 3. Lift the lid and grasp the front of the washer top with both hands. 4. Place your knee on the front of the cabinet and pull the washer top forward and up.
The lid lock mechanism is secured to the bottom of the washer top with two screws. Remove those screws and the wiring will be exposed. Unplug the harness from the old mechanism and connect to the new one.
Secure the new mechanism to the washer top and let the top down.

There should be 2 screws holding it on at the rear. Looking from the rear these will be at each top corner. Once these are removed push the lid from the front of the machine towards the rear and it will pop off.
