To connect a separate motion detector to a light fixture (and assuming the fixture uses incandescent or the newer twisted florescent light bulbs), the RED wire from the detector is attached to the black ("hot") wire from the fixture; the WHITE wire from the detector is attached to the white wire from the power source; the BLACK wire from the detector is attached to the black ("hot") wire from the power source. Sometimes the white and black wires from the power source are mixed up, reversed. So it is best to check to determine which wire is actually "hot" (shows voltage in a meter between the wire and the ground wire or the metal box the power wires come from). In general, a colored wire (often black) in the power source, if wired properly according to accepted custom, will be "hot" and 120v in US. The white wire in the power source is called the "neutral" and should be neutral with the ground wire and/or the metal box. If there is another colored wire in the power source (often red) and if it is not taped with some black tape (to indicate it is really a black wire), then it too may be a 120v. hot wire, but it may also be an 120v. hot wire that is 120v opposite the other 120v wire. That is, one 120v wire is 120v+ and the other is 120v- The difference in voltage between these 120v wires + and - is, hence, 220v. If you see multiple colored wires, it is also a good idea to check the voltage between them to know if you are dealing with a power source that entails 220v. In short, you want to know what you are doing, obviously for personal safety, but also to accomplish what you want... to properly connect the motion detector.

What do I do with the red wire on a Brinks Halogen Motion Sensing outdoor security light

Please perform these connections with the mains power off.

The standard is the Black wire is hot, the White wire is neutral, and the Red wire is switched. For your Sensor connection 120V is connected Black to Black and white to white while the Load is connected White to White and Black to Red (assuming your load is using standard color coding.
Here is a simple diagram for your connection.

Own a Heath zenith sh 5105 motion detector flood light. I wired it to plug into an outlet. Flood light comes on when I plug it in and stays on. Seems as if the sensor isn't working. Do I have it wired...

look to see how you have it wired, most sensor lights have many wires to put together, if it is not wired already from factory, you need to look to see how you have it wired, most sensors have three wires one black one red and one white, black wire goes to power, red wire goes to lamp, white goes to neutral, after all is wired you should have only 3 wires a black a white and a green, black to power white to home neutral and green to ground

Hi my question is motion spot light has has two black wires one from each light and two white from each light and one red from the motion detecter which is connected to the black wires there are two wires...

The red wire from motion detector connects to both of the black wires from the lights. The black wire from the motion detector connects to the incoming black wire from the switch or source. The white wire from the motion detector connects to both of the white wires from the lights and to the incoming white wire from the switch or source (all white wires are under one wirenut).

How do myou connect a 110 motion light

The motion light comes from the store with a neutral (white) hot (black) wires. If there are multiple light bulb sockets on the motion light, the black wires will be connected together and the white wires will be connected together. There will be a motion sensor that has a red, white and black wire. The red wire is connected to the black wires from the bulb sockets. The remaining white and black wire from the sensor switch are connected to the line power from the panel. you must remember that all white wires from the entire project are to be connected together.

Most motion lights feed the line power from an independent switch that connects the power to the motion light fixture. Remember never to connect the white conductors to any red or black wires, as this will create a ground and you will continue to trip your circuit.

I hope this has been helpful.

I am trying to replace a two wire light switch(both white) with a leviton photoelectric 3 wire motion activated light control(red, black and green). I am trying to determine which wire goes to which?

one of the white wires has power on it constantly....that wire connects to the black wire of the leviton.......the other white wire which has no power to it is going to whatever needs power so that wire connects to the red wire of the leviton....the green wire connects to the metal box where your mounting the leviton.
