My Tappan gas oven will heat up to temperature when first started but will not maintain temperature after that. The burner will not re-ignite. If I lower the temperature to the off position then put back up to the desired temperature, the burner re-ignites and gets the oven up to temperature again but will not maintain this temperature without re-starting again Paul

Thermo couple may be defective. Disconnect oven, look inside oven it will be a 2-4 inch tube looking brass type metal. use ohm meter check continuity if non then most likely its defective. other then that it may be the control board.

The pilot adjustment screw is located on the back side of the oven temperature thermostat. Lift the cook top to access it. Use a flat screwdriver to adjust... counter clockwise= bigger flame.

SOURCE: Older Tappan range oven not lighting.

There is no way to light the oven manually. The gas valve will not open until the oven ignitor draws enough current. But replacing the ignitor will fix ya up.

I have a delay when trying to turn on to use the over, then an exploding sound. What is this? Is the ignitor going bad?

SOURCE: Hello, Can't find model/serial number.

Serial number labels are usually located in any one of a number of places -

Under the cooktop in one of the corners
Inside the oven door frame (not on the door)
Behind the bottom drawer pullout on the oven, left hand side
Oven back.

If this unit is anything less than 20 years old, there will be a label somewhere.

Reply back you findings and I can give you more information as to how to repair, and we can identify part numbers. You might also try www.repairclinic.com and see if you can drill down through parts when only knowing the manufacturer.

I have a RCA gas self cleaning oven,It heats on broil but not on bake.we have noticed over the weeks the oven was getting as hot as the thermostat was set at.Now it won't heat at all

Hi. This sounds like a weak igniter, the symptoms usually are: burner won't light, or takes longer than normal to ignite the burner, may or may not smell gas in the oven, does not maintain set temperature or burner does not come on fully. On gas ovens, a glo igniter is like a light bulb, the more you cook, the faster it wears out. Bottom line, needs to be replaced. Good luck.

Our oven doesn't heat and smells like gas

This sounds like a weak igniter, it would have to be a gas oven and the symptoms usually are: takes longer than normal to ignite the burner, may or may not smell gas in the oven, does not maintain set temperature or burner does not come on fully, eventually won't heat at all. On gas ovens, a glo igniter is like a light bulb, the more you cook, the faster it wears out. Bottom line, needs to be replaced. Good luck.

Ka gas range the glow bar comes on but it takes sometimes 15 to 20 min before gas is supplied to burner in oven and finaly ignites

Hi, this sounds like a weak igniter, it would have to be a gas oven and the symptoms usually are: takes longer than normal to ignite the burner, may or may not smell gas in the oven, if it does light the burner, there may be delayed ignition (pop), does not maintain set temperature or burner does not come on fully, eventually won't heat at all. On gas ovens, a glo igniter is like a light bulb, the more you cook, the faster it wears out. Bottom line, needs to be replaced. Good luck.

Tappan gas kitchen oven will not heat

Almost always a weak oven igniter. Remove oven floor by removing 2 screws at rear of floor. Remove flame spreader from burner, if it has one. Turn on oven and see if igniter gets red. It's the caged thing on burner tube. If it does but doesn't light gas, replace igniter. UNPLUG UNIT FIRST!!
Put dishwashing soap on threads of 2 screws holding igniter in place. This will allow it to come out easier. Do-not use oil. It will make your oven smell like a diesel truck.
Remove screws. You will have to remove drawer in front. Underneath you can fin wires from igniter. These will be cut at igniter and connected to igniter with enclosed wire nuts. The 2 wires to igniter go either way.
