I don't know how to back up my computer with this SimpleTech product that I bought. The package says there is a one-click Backup system. I don't see anything like that when I plug in the external drive. I believe I have used it once before about a year ago but I needed help then too and I can't remember what I did. Thanks, Shana

SOURCE: Simple drive external backup

You need to use the Storage Sync program provided with the drive. You can get the latest version at the Simple Tech website

SOURCE: Simpletech 500 gb external usb drive

Hi,

The external hard drive can be fomatted by :

Open the my computer, in the my computer or explorer window you should see the drive letter for the external drive.

Right click on the drive you will get the popup menu.

In that select the format option.

But always use NTFS file formatting system.NTFS provides several advantages over FAT32, including support for larger ile sizes.

Use the full format option.

Wait for sometime, until the format is completed.

Then you are good to go.

Good Luck.

SOURCE: SimpleTech hard drive not found by my computer

You might need to initialize the drive.

Right click on “My Computer” or “Computer” on Vista.
Select “Manage”
On the next screen select “Disk Management”
In the lower middle section you should be able to find your drive.
It will show up as Disk 1 or Disk 2….depending on how many drives you have in your computer.
If you click on the area that says Disk # you should get and option to “initialize drive”.
Also to the right it should show the allocation information for the drive. If it says “unallocated” then the drive needs to be partitioned.
Right click on the white box next to the drive listing.
Select the option “New Partition”
This will bring up the partition wizard and you will need to step through this process.
Select a primary partition.
On the next screen accept the maximum size it will provide.
On the next screen you assign a drive letter.
On the next screen you will do the format and accept the default settings.
The formatting will start and will be busy until it is complete.
You can monitor this from the disk management window.

SOURCE: Simpletech external portable drive not working due to power surge

Then you should not connect the adapter, I think your HDD is fried, because these HDDs are USB powered, they do not need any extra power. That’s why HDD data cable comes with two USB 2 pins , one is for data and other is purely for power.

SOURCE: computer does not recognize simpletech

I have a simpletech external drive that was working, but after i disconnect it unproperlly, i was getting the message <usb not recongnize>. I called simpletech, but customer service is ****, and anyway the drive inside is a hitahi, i have another simpletech and the drive inside is a western digital, whatever...
They told be to go to best buy to make a recover, so i called and they told me it s 250$, and if they cant do it, they will send it to a labotory witch cost 1700$, crazy ******* hein?
I red about getting drivers, putting the hdd in a fridge and much more stupid thing, BUT THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE, OPEN THE CASE, UNDER THE ALLUMINIUM STICKER THERE IS 2 SCREWS, REMOVE THEM, OPEN THE CASE, TAKE THE HDD INSIDE OUT AND REMOVE THE ADAPTER CONNECTED TO THE HDD(WHERE YOU CONNECT THE USB CABLE) CAUSE THIS IS THE PART CAUSING THE PROBLEM, THE HARD DRIVE IS OK AND YOU DIDN T LOOSE NOTHING. So now what you can do is just buy a new case for laptop hard drive (with a new usb adapter included), or buy another simpleshit hdd and switch the adapter part or just buy an adapter to make your hdd an usb hdd and Voila, and after that i suggest you buy yourself a better hdd than simpleShit and make a new backup.

I have SimpleTech drive that I used Storage Sync to back up C drive. Took drive to work and since all the files are 'bpa' cannot open them. I compare this to a simulation of what I bought the drive for -...

The BPA files are the backed up copies of your data. The simpletech utility backs up your files to compresse file ending in BPA. Any computer running the simpletech restore program can extract the data from these files.

You will simply need to install this software on a spare computer in order to test the backups. Frankly though I would just use windows backup to copy the files/folders you want to the drive raw as this can be read anywhere.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Mine will work on my desktop but not my notebook

This is usually a corrupt USB driver for the device. On the machine that has trouble recognizing the drive:
right click my computer
click on properties
click on device manager
find the USB devices, click the plus sign to expand the tree.
Plug in your drive, see which new device appears, if it has the exclamation point, then right click on the device and click uninstall. Reboot the system.

SimpleTech hard drive not found by my computer

if you are running windows, then check the following:

go to control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> storage -> disk management.

you probably have a drive (located on the bottom right) that is listed with no drive letter, just assign it a drive letter and see if it comes back, if not, the drive is probably not initializing and you might have to either format it or replace it.

I have a SimpleTech Portable Drive (back-up)

I assume you're using the StorageSync software. Go here to make sure you have the latest version:

http://www.simpletech.com/support/support_downloads_storagesync1.42.php

Since I don't know what you're clicking, I can only tell you that you need to choose the "Incremental Backup" radio button at the bottom left of the Backup Window, then click the "Backup" button.
