Broken power button

Sounds like crappy solder on th gpu. Basically, you need to take a hair dryer to the GPU and reseat it. HP had this problem on a bunch of older DV models. Without knowing your model, I can't post specific instructions.

Supplies needed:
Thermal paste, I recommendArctic Silver as it has better heat transfer properties
Hair dryer
wooden spoon

Strip the chassis to the motherboard, pull the heatsink from the GPU and set the board on a heat resistant surface. Clean all old thermal paste from the GPU. Heat up the GPU with your hair dryer while using the wooden spoon to press down on it.. When you see the solder turn shiny, turn off the dryer. Continue to press down on the GPU until the solder changes back to a dull color. Let everything cool down before reassembly. During reassembly, make sure to clean the old thermal paste off the heatsink and reapply a fresh layer. Reassemble your laptop, and turn it on to see if the fix worked.

I know at one point there was a bad batch of solder that made its way onto assorted motherboards, so this fix may work for the same issue on many laptops. Good luck!

disconnect the adapter +battery HOLD THE POWER button by 30 seconds aprox, this trick is by eliminate all ESD.
Try again connecting the adpater +battery, if work is o.k
If the problem persist, connect only the adapt and see if the computer work, if does , connect the battery, if work is o.k .if doesnot.
The battery is faulty, RUN the software diagnostic with the adapter and see what going on inside of computer, the power supply inside can be faulty or the battery.

As a last trick, open the battery take out the small battery for CMOS, by 20 seconds. And turn on the computer can be TURN on.

You turned on your laptop and horrors upon horrors, the screen is BLACK! You see that the laptop has power but besides that nothing is happening. I want you to know that there is a very good chance you can get out of this situation quickly and without any cost. This fix works on all brands of laptops:


• 1) TAKE OUT YOUR LAPTOP BATTERY
• 2) REMOVE YOUR AC ADAPTOR CORD, that's the wall power, remove it.
• 3) NOW HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR 30 SECONDS That will drain any static electricity that has built up on your laptop system board and many times fixes the problem of a black screen. After the 30 seconds re-connect your laptop to the wall power and hit the power button normally and see if the laptop comes back up. Replace your battery.

A blacked-out screen doesn't necessarily indicate a broken monitor.
If the computer has run out of charge or is in hibernation or sleep mode, if the screen is too dark, or if the display cable has come disconnected from the motherboard, the screen may appear black or fail to turn on. To fix a blacked-out laptop screen, troubleshoot the screen settings, check the LCD connector and see if the computer is awake and receiving power.
Touch the touchpad or move the external mouse to see if the computer is asleep or hibernating. If the computer fails to respond, press "Enter" on the keyboard. Press the power button if the screen remains black. Confirm that the power indicator light, found at the front of the computer or above the keyboard, is glowing solid green or blue. Confirm that the power adapter is plugged into the computer and into a wall outlet. Confirm that battery indicator light is glowing solid green or blue. Hold down the "Fn" key. Press the up-arrow to see if the screen brightness increases.
Some computers also use the "F6" or "F7" keys to increase screen brightness. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off the laptop.
Remove the AC adapter from the computer, close the screen, and then turn the PC over. Slide the battery latch to eject the battery. Pull the battery out of its compartment. Turn the computer back over, open the lid, and insert the edge of a flathead screwdriver or other flat, solid object beneath the bezel above the keyboard. Wedge the edge of the keyboard bezel off of the top cover.
Work your way along the edge of the keyboard bezel to loosen it.
Pull the bezel off the laptop. Trace the cable coming from the laptop screen to the connector found beneath the bezel.

Reconnect the display cable to the motherboard if the cable has come loose from the connector.
Line up the tabs on the bezel with the slots along the top of the keyboard. Insert the right edge of the bezel into the gap above the keyboard, and then push the bezel back in place. Turn the computer back on.

If the laptop screen is still blacked out, connect an external monitor to the video port on the side of the PC to confirm that the video card isn't defective.

If the external monitor works, the LCD screen could be broken.
If the monitor doesn't work, the motherboard or video card might need to be replaced.

Remove the battery from its compartment on the side of your Dell Inspiron laptop computer.

Remove the power adapter from its plug on the side of the Dell Inspiron (if your laptop is currently plugged into a wall outlet).

Press down and hold the "Power" button on the laptop for one to two minutes. This will dispel the excess electrical current that is built up inside the laptop.

Put the battery back inside the compartment of your Dell Inspiron.

Plug your power adapter back into the side of the Dell Inspiron. Press "Power." Your laptop computer will now turn on.

Certainly, if you jumper the connections to see which ones turn the monitor on or off, then you can go to an electrical supply place and get a micro switch and wire it in in place of the power button, or perhaps find a type that is flat that the power button can press. What you need to determine is if it is a push-on, push -off type switch, which always stays on or off depending on position or if it is a momentary interrupt switch where the button pressed momentarily turns it on and then releases and a second press connects the circuit to turn it off. You can do this by testing with your jumper wire, attach it and if the monitor stays on when you remove it, then goes off when you attach it again, you need the second type switch, if it goes off when removed, you need the always-on always -off first type switch. .

Chances are, you have a bad motherboard. You can try one thing. In my experience, it works about 10% of the time.
Unplug the power cable from the laptop. Remove the battery. Press and hold the Power button on the laptop for 30 seconds (This will drain the power from all components). Put the battery back in the laptop. Connect the power cable. Try to turn it on. Again, in my experience, it works seldomly (I promise I've seen it work several times, though).
If that doesn't correct your issue, you may have a DC jack which has solder joints broken. If your laptop charges "sometimes" but not others, this is probably you. The DC Jack is the component inside of your laptop which the power cable plugs into. Over time, whether you do as much as trip over the cable down to just laying the laptop on your bed (it will sink down and put pressure on the DC jack/power cable), the DC jack may have wiggles itself free of the solder joints holding it to the motherboard. This is not a cheap repair.You can test this by giving SLIGHT upward pressure to the power cable at about an inch away from the edge of the computer. Keep an eye on the front LEDs. If no other LEDs light up, then you probably have a bad power cable. If, when gently pressing up on the power cable, you get an LED to turn ON, then you have a bad DC jack.
In either case, the only fix is to take the PC to a computer repair shop.

Have you tried draining the power of your computer? Often performing power drain resolves any display issue. Please follow the steps below for the basic instructions on how to perform a power drain.

1. Turn off the system completely. You may also press and hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds until system turned off completely.

2. Unplug the AC adapter from the power outlet.

3. Remove the battery from the system.

4. Now, press and hold down the power button for 15-20 seconds.

5. Plug in the AC adapter to the power outlet and put back the battery inside the computer. Try turning on the system.

Hi,
by pressing the power button in, the computer has gone into standby or hibernate mode.
Heres what you Do:- press and hold the power button for between 10 to 20 seconds.
that should bring it out of hibernation.
if that does,nt work. remove the main battery.
when you,ve resolved the problem, run a disk-scan via your windows operating system.
