Upgrading processor I'll confess to not knowing much about computers but was wondering about the possibility of upgrading my processor. Some programmes that I run on the computer uses up so much of the processors capabilities that I can't even open a word document without encountering difficulties. Ideally I would love to be able to upgrade to a dual core so would like to know if this is possible, and if not what would be the best suitable upgrade for me to look at. The specification for my processor given by the CPU-Z programme is AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+

Follow the procedures outlined and be sure to clean the surface of the heat-sink (alcohol works) and reapply thermal grease compound to the surface of the new processor.

I would suggest you not to go for a processor upgrade, if you want to play games. You should consider upgrading your graphics Card(GPU). The processor that you mentioned above is enough for playing High-end games when combined with a good graphics Card. Upgrading your processor will boost very little game performance. But when you will upgrade your graphics Card. You will notice great boost in game performance and more new games will be supported. Two major manufacturer of Graphics Card are NVIDIA and ATi. You can opt any one of them. Nvidia GPUs are considered as a Good Performer. But also ATi is known for its long lasting life. Both the manufacturers produces a long list of models. Opt for the one that suits your Budget and the performance.

ur computer has an expandable memory Max of 128 MB> anything more than that will be too powerful for ur computer's motherboard> upgrading the memory means u need a new motherboard and if possible a new processor too

Upgrading processor is not likely a practical solution; find out the motherboard manufacturer and contact their site for more information. As to upgrading the motherboard, you'll have to know what kind/size of board your system will require. If you don't have lots of experience, this process is very risky.

Frankly, the cheapest way to upgrade your computer is to buy a used and working product with Windows XP already installed. Go to http://craigslist.com, select your city, and search for a brand name you trust. I've bought DOZENS of used computers very cheap that way (I'm writing this on a $2,200 Dell Latitude D620 I bought fiv months old for $500, who needed the cash!)

Sounds like the processor you're trying to upgrade to isn't the same frequency. The processor, motherboard, and memory have a matched frequency. For example; a motherboard with a frequency of say PC4200 will only accept a processor and memory of a PC4200 frequency. If you try to use PC5300 memory it basically won't do anything, blank screen, or maybe a beep. The same if you tried to use a processor with PC5300 on the PC4200 board. The best way to find the frequency rating is to look on the memory. They class the memory by frequency, but rarely ever list the frequency for the board or processor. Research the new processor to find out the memory class and then see if it matches the memory in your machine. If it doesn't then the processor won't work. If it does, then new processor may not be compatible, and that means more research.

no upgrading the motherboard will not help.
try to change the hard disk , replace it with bigger capacity.
check with the service center guy if they can put 2.0 or 2.4ghz processor.
