My roller brush no longer rotates? - Dyson DC07 Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

The motor rotates the bar. My guess would be that the rubber belt that goes from the motor to the belt has fallen off the bar , broke, or the bar is not seated properly. GOOD LUCK FRIEND.

If you have a belt on this, then I would change it. If you have the type that works with suction and doesn't have a belt, then I would pull the brush out and clean out all the hair and carpet chunks that get built up on the ends of the roller brush.

Be sure that there are no fibers wound around the roller or lodged in the wheel well of the brush roller. That is usually the cause of a brush roller not rotating. You might need to use scissors to clip the fibers and then pull them from the roller. The fibers might range from human and pet hair to carpet fibers, threads, string, yarn, embroidery floss. They wind around the roller and eventually "tighten up" so that the rotator will not move. I have found that, depending on my current craft project, I may have quilting thread, knitting yarn, embroidery floss, or other such goodies wrapped around the roller. When our daughters were at home we would have long, beautiful blonde hair tangled in the roller. I hope this helps.

If you have replaced the clutch already, then this can really only be one other problem, and that is the roller brush. If the roller brush's bearing have locked up, and the brush is no longer spinning, this is going to cause the clutch to make that horrible grinding noise, and a lot of people incorrectly think automatically that the clutch needs to be replaced.

Here's a very easy way that you can test the roller brush on your Dyson to see if it may have gone bad. In 10 years of fixing and selling vacuum cleaners, I have never seen such a cheap roller brush that's in the Dyson DC07 models with clutches, unfortunately this is notorious problem we see on this particular model.

Ok, so to test out the brush, make sure the vacuum is unplugged, and turn it upside down. Remove the 3 plastic screws on the bottom plate, and remove the bottom plate to expose the brush completely.

You may then simply pull upwards on the roller brush, and take the brush out of the belt that is wrapped around it. After the brush has been completely removed from the vacuum cleaner, hold the brush with only your pointer fingers in each hand, and only put your pointer fingers on the outside of the bearing caps on each side of the roller brush.

While holding only the bearing caps with your fingers, try to spin the brush with your thumbs. The brush should spin freely in your fingers, and you should get a good 5 or 6 rotations with each spin.

If the brush doesn't spin, then your roller brush has gone bad. Espcecially with home that have long haired pets, or females, the hair gets between the bearing cap and the bearing inside and causes the plastic caps that are covering the bearings to heat up, ultimately causing the bearing caps to melt, and finally the bearings sieze, and the brush will no longer spin freely which is why the clutch makes that awful noise.

Good news is that the roller brush is not as expensive or as difficult to replace as the clutch was. You may purchase the DC07 roller brush here;

If your roller brush does spin, then I'm baffled as to what could be causing the clutch to make noise, but I'd like to try and help you figure this out.

Does there seem to be good air-flow and suction? If not, look for a blockage somewhere. Otherwise (and more likely because of what you say about the sound), look to the brush roller. Does it rotate when the machine's switched on? If so, maybe the bristles are worn and no longer make contact with the carpet properly. If not, the belt that drives the brush roller is broken and must be replaced. Your Owner Manual will tell you how to do this.  Good luck!

It's simple to tell if a belt has broken. Just switch the machine on and have a look (look, don't feel) to see if the brush roller is rotating. If it is, then the belt is not broken.
Depending on how much use your machine has had, it's quite likely that the brushes on the brush roller are worn to the point where you need a new brush roller.  Most vacuum cleaners rely on rotation of the brush roller to pull them along, so if the bristles are too short this doesn't happen.
