Can't download I can't download from my DS-20 to the DSS software on my Mac. The download button is not illuminated and it is gray in the menu. The only thing I can figure out is that the manual said I needed to register it but there was never a place during installation to do so.

I know you will need the serial # to install, if you don't have one you can get this software version it say that it is for the Olympus DS-5000 digital recorder but also it is compatible with the previous version Olympus DS-4000 digital recorder at http://www.tvps.com/Products/Olympus-AS-5001-DSS-Player-Pro-Dictation-Version-5---New__OL-AS-5001.aspx

If you are using dss player lite, it does not support downloading. It is only a player. If you have Player for Mac version 1, you need to update to version 6. It can be found here.

After installing the software, you can download the upgrade to dss player Standard from Olympus at this link.

1st does the software specifically say it will work on your particular MAC operating system? This is important.

I don't know if a Mac version of software came with your Digital Recorder.

I have a PC, and a similar Digital Recorder. A DS-330 but I'm too lazy to install the software, DSS Player 2002 and then look for the USB cable.

So, I connected the Digital Recorder's Ear directly to the audio-in of the PC via a mono (2 wire) patch cable, with a standard 3.5 mm plug at each end. (As long as it fits in both, the Recorder and your MacBook, it will work). I suspect "The Source" (Radio Shack) may have such item.
You can also use a "stereo" patch cable.

I use Audacity as the sound recorder and then convert it to MP3. There is a version for Mac available too.

Try logging into Olympus support. The site is a little difficult to navigate but go in through the professional digital dictaphones and then into archived (or older) models until you find the DS 330. Follow the links to software downloads and you should be able to download the DSS suite and all updates. The DSS suite automatically recognizes most Olympus DSS models. If you will "save" the downloads first, you can burn them to a disk so that you will have a back up copy

You will need to search for a third party program that will allow you to convert WMA files to MP3 as the software that came with the recorder does not allow for this option. Go to google and search for WMA to MP3 conversion programs. There are several free shareware programs available.

The folder lock can oly be solved by chosing the option "format" in the sub-menu. But please copy the *.dss - files still resting at your card at your harddisk first.
When the recorder finishes the format procedure, all folders will be unlocked again.

The "Read-Only-Failure" will occur again at recorders with differend user profiles, when you put the switched-off recorder into the docking station first and switch the power button to "on". So avoid this constellation!

This has happened to me often. I have had to remove the DS-50 using the safely remove hardware button and then reconnect. Usually, that fixes it. I am talking about downloading podcasts here.

I myself now face the problem that the device is not sensed by the computer. I'm waiting for Olympus support to reply to my email.
