The ERR message indicates a camera malfunction. In my D-90 manual it says that it can be cleared by releasing the shutter. The only way to do that is to turn the camera off and back on. Rarely, that won't work and you have to remove and reinstall the battery.
The manual also says that it this have frequently or persist to contact a Nikon authorized service center. I would contact Nikon tech support at www.Nikon.com and discuss the problem them before contacting an authorized service center.

On page 256 of the D-90 users manual it says that ERR indicates a camera malfunction that can be cleared by releasing the shutter. On my D-90 when this occurs, I have to turn the camera off to make the shutter release. Sometimes, but rarely, I have to remove and reinstall the battery to get the shutter to release.
The manual also says that if this error occurs frequently or persists to contact n authorized Nikon service center. I suggest that you contact Nikon tech support at www.nikon,com before you contact a service center to see what tech support advises. I have heard of people resolving this problem by upgrading the firmware (camera software). Nikon tech support can tell you if this will help.

If the 'CARD NOT INITIALIZED' error appears: First check that the SmartMedia is inserted in the correct direction. You can also try wiping the gold-colored contact area on the SmartMedia with a soft cloth. Remove the batteries from the digital camera, leave them for at least an hour and then reload the batteries and check whether the camera recognizes the SmartMedia. If the 'CARD NOT INITIALIZED' error still appears, contact the store where you purchased the camera or the nearest FUJIFILM authorized service center in your country.
ERR means camera error and CHA means this card cannot be used. You are probably getting the CHA error because of a camera malfunction. Try removing card and batteries with the camera turned "ON", the press and hold the shutter release for approx. 30 seconds. Replace battery and card. If your D90 has a "reset" button on bottm of camera, press that when batteries are installed and camera ON if the first doesn't work. If it continues, then Service by an authorized Nikon Service Center is advised.
try pressing the 2 green buttons to reset the unit . if you get lucky and it turns on, immediately follow the steps to update your firmware on this website http://ampin.wordpress.com/2007/03/02/nikon-d40-firmware-upgrade/ , otherwise you will need to take the camera to an authorized repair center . :)
