Many newer HP Printers internally keep track of your cartridges by a serial number embedded into the cartridge. When it's low, the printer remembers. This is entirely done within the printer itself, and not the printer software. Some printers EXPIRE the cartridges after 18 months according to the installation date even it is not empty.

Outrageous, but true.

A fix? Most HP printers will only keep 2 cartridges in memory, so if you have 2 extra cartridges, (even empty ones) you could cycle them through to reset the printers memory, and reset the ink level to full. Basically, even though you've refilled your cartridge, the printers has the cartridge's serial number stored in memory. This will reset it.

Here is a possible solution to the dell printer BS when I bought replacement cartridge for the black I didn't want or need the color. When I attempted to replace it would say unsupported cartridge on the computer screen and right cartrige error or w/ever it said. who cares . It is a S C A M but if you only need black try this... Take a hammer and smash the printer NO DON"T ... Roofer joke. Seriously though just remove the color cartridge and snap it shut empty with the black " replacement cartridge " snapped in and your good to go in black and white. I bought my replacement cartridge at

Flex ribbon cable at the rear of the housing that the cartidge fits into is probably punctured. It happens a lot with this model. Remove the offending cartridge and look at the electronic ribbon in the rear where it contacts with the cartridge contacts. There is a spring tension wire in the housing that holds the cartridge snug that breaks loose and punctures the flex ribbon rendering the printer useless as there are no part available to repair this HP defect. It is a well known defect / poor design flaw in this machine.

Ive tried removing the right cartridge so I can print in black, but now , once I refilled the black one, it wont even let me print black!! this is desperate; can anyone help?
